Ember POV:
"Mum", I called out across the hallway leading to mum's room.
It has been 4months now that Dad died and I can say we are pulling off strong, although it hasn't been easy.
I couldn't focus at school and depression was setting in a month after the burial. If not for my friend's, most especially Alex, whom I have become inseparable with, I could have been taken to an asylum. We became so close that everyone had the thought that we are in a relationship, although I like him but I don't think he does. The presentation went well, thanks to him, he is always call via video call to carry me along with the progress and I also never stopped sending updates to him. Han also didn't let me breath with materials from class, so I can say my friends got me prepared for the first semester examination which I aced.
It's one and half month to our final Examination and I am returning to school in the next 4hours. I have been curious at why my mum told me she has something to say to me.
"Mum", I knocked at her door.
"Honey, come in", she answered at the other side of the door.
"Mum, you wanted to tell me something, hope no problem?", I asked out of curiosity.
"November, there is no problem, I just want to tell you a story", she smiled.
This is the first time in years my mum has called my full name with all seriousness and the is even scarier than when she is angry.
"There was a white couple that loves traveling, they have heard of so many things about Nigerian, from their dressing, food, rivers etc. and wished to go there as tourist. The wife loves water, so after a month of their staying, she pleaded with her husband to let them travel down to a state in Nigeria that has a historical background. With the help of their translator, they made their way to the river after getting to the state. The wife decided to swim, but was warned not to cause any harm to the fishes in the river. After 30min of swimming while her husband watched, she decided it is time she comes out of the river, unknown to her a small fish has swam to the side of the river that didn't reach her ankle, she stepped on the small fish and it died. Immediately, she fainted. The husband called for help, until a inhabitant of the Town went to call for help. And it was said that a woman who had a white clothes on, said some words and a spirit came out of the river", mum paused to drink water.
"Mum please continue", I was eager to know the end of the story.
"Alright dear", she replied and continued the story, "the spirit was furious and screamed, Human, Human, Human, what have I done to you that you killed my second grand daughter, for this that you have done, starting from your second granddaughter of the first generation till the fourth generation, will be born with any sickness and won't be cured until they find true love and if they marry out of no love, they will die at age 60. This curse can only be broken if the fourth generation granddaughter finds true love before she clocks 23years, or else, the curse shall continue. And all of a sudden the spirit disappeared, and the wife woke up. With this the white couple traveled back to their country thinking everything was superstition and keep telling the children the story".
"Ember, this white couple are your great great grandparents, and you are the fourth generation granddaughter. Due to your father being the only child of the family and a male, he was affected but your grandparents didn't believe in the story and our marriage was an areanged one, which I believe made your dad die at age 60. I am scared Ember, I don't want to lose you"
"Mom, why is it now that you are just telling me", I was angry and sad at the same time.
"I am sorry, we thought all will be well", mum said with sadness looping out of her voice.
I can't be angry at Dad and her, they didn't also believe it at first.
"Alright mom, let's believe everything will be fine and things get better", I assured her, even tho I was breaking inside.
I was still in her embrace when we heard the doorbell.
"Ooh, it is already 2pm, that must be Alex", I said making my way to mum's door.
"Wait Ember", I paused, "Do you like Alex?" Mum asked while she grin.
"Yes, mum, but I don't think he likes me, I feel he is close with me out of pity", I replied sadly.
"Don't feel down, he might be the answer to everything" my mum said, "And oh, do you remember you both went to the same kindergarten, then they lived here for a year before moving back to USA for business before they came back again, and I can remember how you always rant that you like him and want to marry as your future ambition", mum said mockingly.
"That is a lie", I was surprised and embarrassed.
"It is the truth darling", mum said in the midst of laughter.
I rushed out to get the door, and it was really Alex.
"Hi Alex, come in", I ushered him in.
"Ember, are you ready to go", he asked.
"Yes, I have packed, let me get my bag", I said while I turned and then remembered what mum said, "hmm, Alex which kindergarten did you attend", I asked.
"The one in this town, is there any issue" Alex replied.
"Mum said we attended the same school", I said.
"Wait, I thought as much, I thought you looked familiar the first day we met, you still loved cake and the only thing missing was-", I cut him off in-between.
"My glasses, I used contact lens when I am not indoor", I said surprised.
"Well, look at us, we later got back together as friends", he said smiling.
"Let me go get my bag and say my goodbyes to mum", I said as I walked to my room.
Mum came outside and said her goodbyes to us.
