"We found her in the office. Kingpin had a room for her. When Nat and I broke in, she was all we found," Clint said quietly.
Kate nodded, absorbing every word Clint was saying, her eyes fixated on the little seven-year-old girl who sat across from Natasha, silently shaking or nodding her head, refusing to speak.
In a way, it reminded Kate of herself. She was around the same age as the girl when her father passed away, and she couldn't imagine living with that monster.
"So we think she's Kingpin's kid?" Kate questioned. It didn't make much sense, but it was a theory.
"Maya gave us some insight that sometimes, when Kingpin killed families, he'd keep the kids because he was too eaten up with guilt to hurt them."
Kate, instead of responding, hummed and rested her hand on the one-way mirror that separated them from the room.
This could have been her.
She could have been in this same exact situation if her mom had refused to help the mafia leader.
"Where does she go after this?"
It was a question that Kate knew Clint didn't really have an answer to, judging by the way he sucked in a breath of air.
"Honestly, kid, she'll either come home with me to the farm, stay here, or Wanda and Natasha will take her to their place."
Kate crossed her arms at this. This kid didn't need that. The Barton house was wonderful but it was filled with children and an environment that would be too loud for a kid with this much trauma. Wanda was just recovering from her pregnancy with the twins, and Natasha wouldn't be able to give the girl the attention she needed. At least, not the attention Kate believed she needed.
"Let me talk to Yel. Give me a couple of months off, and we can take her."
Kate blurted out, knowing this girl needed her. She wasn't going to give up on her. Not like her mom gave up on her.
"Kate, that's...that's big. What about your team? There's a lot of factors that go into this. She still won't respond to us."
Kate just nodded at Clint. "I know. Peter has always been a good leader. I'll still help, just not in the field and not all the time. Yelena wanted us to take some time off too. I'm sure it'll work out."
Clint chuckled. "You got guts. You sure you guys are ready to have a kid?"
Kate had always wanted a kid with Yelena. They were so busy, however, that the thought was but a dream. Now, though, this was an opportunity where they really didn't have a choice but to drop everything to have this kid.
"We've always been ready, just always so busy," Kate voiced, watching as Natasha left the girl alone in the room.
She was terrified.
Her hair was jet black, greasy from the lack of a shower, her skin pale from the lack of sun, and her eyes carried heavy, dark circles full of tears she never cried.
"She'll be traumatized. This will be one of the hardest missions you've ever taken. You do understand that, right?"
This girl was more than a mission to her. She was a little kid who deserved a new start, who deserved love.
"I'm never one to back down, Clint. You know this. It's settled. Give me the papers, I'll sign them when I call Yelena."
Clint just nodded, wrapping Kate into a side hug before stepping away to converse with Natasha.
