When the tall figure approached Oruese Odoh, she thought she was seeing another version of someone familiar. How come Layla always grew taller every long break?
"Ese!" Layla jolted her from her thoughts "Aren't you happy that I'm back"
"Sure" Ese hugged her "I was just thinking about your height, I'm still a shorty and you've once again grown a few centimeters"
"Awwn, its healthy food and perfect genes" Layla boasted turning around for her friend to see her new look. Ese rolled her eyes.
"I thought you'll stay longer in London. How was your trip?"
"Oh yeah. It was ah-maiizinggg! There's a lot of gist"
"Okay, you'll tell me about it when we get to the hostel" Ese said "so first things first, you've missed our resumption test so you have 10 marks to catch up with and you have tons of biology notes to copy. Let me tell you, SS2 notes are not short at all oo"
"Uh alright" Layla muttered "there's so much work already, you nerd. What about Uche and Kinsley?" she brightened up.
"Kinsley is in class and Uche is with Mrs. Egbe"
"Uche has offended her again if I'm right?"
"Yup. That woman has never been friendly"
"You'd better don't let her hear you? If you don't want ogbonge slap" Layla said and they both laughed.
Layla and Ese were one of the students of one of the most prestigious schools in the state. The school was both a day and boarding school and was owned by a very wealthy man. The CEO of the Salvation Group and the General Overseer of Divine Salvation church, Pastor Maxwell Simeon. Nearly all the students from the school were sons and daughters of influential and renowned parents. The school was known for his impeccable academic standard and reputation.
After Layla offloaded her luggage, Ese accompanied her friend to prep class. Soon they found their other friend Kinsley heading towards them.
Kinsley Maxwell was the son of the owner of the school. He was very intelligent and was known for his clear records and humble behavior. He was quite different from the proud and bossy rich kids who stepped on other people.
"OMG. Look who's here, it's our drama queen!" Kinsley said and gave Layla a warm hug "Look how fresh you are!"
"Abeg don't make me blush" Layla said humorously.
"So how was London nah?"
"It was very nice_"
"Hey" a deep voice interrupted Layla and she turned around, shaken to the bone marrow.
"Uche!" Layla yelled "you this..."
"Yep, I got you again" Uche laughed "won't you hug me?"
"You creep, if you come near me" Layla hissed
"So what happened, what did Mrs. Egbe say this time?" Ese asked
"She said I should write a punishment paper of 60 leaves containing the words 'I would always do my homework' and I'm supposed to submit on Monday"
Layla laughed
"What's so funny, you're laughing at my bad luck" Mark deadpanned
"Ah! That woman is a comedian. Does she think you have magic fingers? And why aren't you always doing your homework, its important y'know" Layla said amid giggles
"Her assignments are the longest and most difficult. She makes me hate government"
"Okay, I'll help you with the punishment paper"
"Thanks bro" Uche smiled.
"Oh yeah I forgot to tell you, there are two new girls in our class, Layla" Ese changed the topic.
"Really?" Layla asked excited
"Yes, and one of them is my seat partner"
"Hmm? So how's she?"
"Well... her name is Feyifunmi. I don't really know much about her though. She's quiet and kinda weird"
Layla stared not really impressed "what about the other girl?"
"Nancy is what you'll call the 'epitome of cool'. She's so tall, with long hair, rich and super fancy" Ese explained "she's always on the spotlight and she just likes to brag about how rich her parents are, she's a half-caste_"
"Hey wait. I thought all these praises were Sandra's, I mean she is the 'coolest girl in school'- unfortunately"
"Uh! That's old news, Nancy is the new coolest and she's Sandra's biggest rival" Kinsley chirped in
"Really?!" Layla asked cheerfully "thank goodness!"
"Ah ahn! You will not support your own cousin?" Kinsley asked
"Oh please, she has always been a pain in the ass. Serves her right" Layla said "Remember what she said about Jemimah that day? She said my sister was a slave and that I was only privileged to school here because she had enslaved herself to Salvation Group"
"Oops! Let's change topic before her volcano erupts" Ese cut in
"Anyways, I've temporarily disowned her as my cousin. Until she eats back those words she said that day" Layla folded her arms and Uche rolled his eyes.
