Drifting trying to hold onto the stillness that breathes through the cool waves that crash against her skin, the sunrise that kisses her neck. The bright blue water where the sand peers through trying to find the sun. Whilst crashing feet and paws pound onto the surface splashing in the waves in the summer haze and laughter that ripples through the air.
Her little face lit up with excitement with each splash she makes her little armbands struggling to stay upon her arms .
'Aw look at her'.
'I know she's come on leaps and bounds haven't you my princess'.
'Aw she's like a little fish'.
'Careful!'
Her eyes shimmering in the ripples at the dazzling sight of her little miracle Maisie. Smiling blissfully they drift in the sunshine wave after wave crash against their legs.
'Don't go too far, stay where mummy can see you ok'.
Free flowing in the cool nothingness not even a whisper can be heard the melodic waves aren't tuned to her instead they caress her wrapping her up tight in cool blue blankets. Drifting in the pitch black not even an ink of blue can be seen as it's swallowed up by the sea salt creatures who inhabit it.
'I told you not to go too far. Maisie! Maisie!'
Lost in the abyss drifting towards an endless nothingness the heavy waves rock and sway her whilst the blue temperance awakens. There she drifts in a foreign world charmed by it's luscious waves but still she can't hear the sound of the ocean she can't sing it's song.
'Maise!'
The darkness pierces her eyes, her nose floods with salt water, her breath seized by the dense pressure. Thrashing her legs red faced she shot to the surface like a bullet gasping for air. Her cries for help fell upon crashing waves that threw her onto the shoreline.
'What have you done? Do you realise what you've done? You've killed her, you've just killed her!'
'No no no Maisie Maisie!'
Rattling the keys the door cranks open.
'Sam... what is the matter? Sam Sam, are you listening to me?'
Drifting in and out of the white walls her dark brown eyes fixated on Maisie's limp body.
'How could you be so irresponsible?'
'I never meant to hurt her. I thought she'd be ok. I thought she'd be alright'.
'Sam!'
Throwing his shoes off he rushed upstairs throwing the door open weeping like an ocean roaring in the storm she cradles Maisie in her arms. Her soaked nighty drips onto the floor Maisie smiles and points at the bubbles in the bath.
'Dad da'.
'... Hello sweetheart, darling what's the matter?'
'You must never tell him. He will take her away from you'.
'Sam what's the matter?'
Drug out of the water still itching for more to find her daughter's torturted screams and drag them to shore to feel the waves hit once more but all that's left is a wet nightgown.
Bewildered, she studies her brown eyes how they shimmer with excitement for the bursting bubbles she wiggles to chase them clutching at the air her brown ringlets bounce with delight.
'Sam'.
'Yeah'.
'Are you alright?'
'Yeah why wouldn't I be?'
'Have you been crying? Were you shouting before?
'Don't say anything, she's safe now that's all that matters'.
'How was work?'
'Sorry'.
'How was work?'
'It was alright - um are you sure you're ok'.
Rising suddenly, stepping over Mark she rushes out of the bathroom.
'- Right I think it's bedtime for you my little princess'.
'I'd be a lot more careful from now on If I were you'.
'I know I'm sorry'.
'What was that?'
'Oh nothing. Do you want to say goodnight to dad da? Goodnight dad da'.
Kissing Maisie goodnight he sheepishly waits at the door studying Sam whilst she drifts through into the bedroom.
'Sam... Sam'
'Yeah'.
'Are you alright?'
'You've already asked me that'
Throwing off her nightgown she wraps her dressing gown around her and gets into bed.
'No but you aren't are you?'
'I said I'm fine'.
'... You know you can talk to me'.
'Good night.'
