Naira's Flat
Naira is half-laying on the bed, snuggled into the blanket with Jiya, reading her a bed-time story.
Jiya is clung to her mother, holding her teddy-bear close, her head resting on Naira's chest, as she absent-mindedly picks at the fabric of her mother's night dress.
Naira(reading from the storybook): And they lived happily ever after...
She closes the book and looks down at Jiya, who is still wide-awake.
Naira: Jiya...I've already read you two bed-time stories...ab aur nahi...chalo ab jaldi se so jao...kal subah uthna hai school keliye...
Jiya: But mummaaa...
Naira sighs and gives her a nod to go ahead.
Jiya was a curious child. She used to have plenty of questions in her mind by the end of bed-time stories every night. Usually Naira was patient in answering them but tonight she was really tired and just wanted to be done with her chores and go to bed. However, her daughter's curious, puppy eyes always melted her.
Naira: Bolo...
Jiya: Kya fairy tales mein humesha happy ever afters hote hain? Jaise Cinderella ka happy ever after Prince Charming ke saath...Ariel ka Prince Eric ke saath aur Beauty ka Beast ke saath...
Naira(thinking a bit): Most of them have happy ever afters...
Jiya(innocently): Toh real-life mein kyu nahi?
Naira is startled by the depthness of Jiya's question. For the first time ever, she is taken aback, caught offguard and has no answers to it.
Jiya(innocently): Aapko papa ke saath 'happy ever after' kyu nahi mila?
Naira feels as if she is further pushed to the corner. She is intimidated by Jiya's innocent gaze. She remains quiet for few seconds, then leans closer to her daughter and answers gently -
Naira(caressing Jiya's hair): Aisa zaruri nahi hai beta...ki...agar main aapke papa se pehle mili, toh mera 'happy ever after' unke saath hi likha ho...
Jiya squeezes her eyes in confusion.
Naira(more like speaking to herself): Asliyat mein...kabhi kabhi humara 'happy ever after' kisi aur ke saath likha hota hai...aur agar koi na mile toh...bass humare saath...khud ke saath...(looks down at Jiya) zindagi fairy tale ki tarah simple nahi hoti Jiya...
Jiya stops picking at the fabric of Naira's night dress and raises her gaze to look at her mother.
Jiya: Toh aapka 'happy ever after' kiske saath likha hai mumma?
Naira: (poking Jiya's nose) Tumhare saath, my baby...aur kiske saath? (squeezes her cheeks) mera 'happy ever after' toh tum hi ho...jaise tumhara hasna, tumhara mujhe aise hug karke sona, tumhara mujhse sawaal karna...yeh sab mere liye fairytale se kam thodi hain...
