N O O R ' S P O V
"Noor, pass me that book" Anvika di said pointing at a book on table, I handed her the book absentmindedly.
I was back in Udaipur after long years. A city that held so many memories, both good and bad. But mostly bad. Memories of feeling unloved and distant.
Returning to Udaipur should have been a joyful occasion. After all, it was Anvika didi's wedding. But for me, it was a nightmare. Family members were busy discussing the upcoming wedding, making plans, gossiping. I sat quietly, I wasn't in the mood for socializing. i am never in mood for that though.
"Noor, are you even listening?" bua's voice jolted me back to reality. "Huh? What?" I mumbled, realizing everyone was looking at me.
"Seriously, Noor, sometimes I wonder if you're even a part of this family," Bua says, shaking her head. here we go again with the family drama. "Yeah, well, sometimes I wonder the same thing,"
Mummy shot me a glare from across the room, "Maybe if you focused on finding a husband instead of sulking in corners, you'd feel more like a part of things," bua taunted.
"Shaadi karke aapne kya ukhaad liya? Hua toh divorce hi," (What have you got by getting married? Divorce is what happened) Oh shit! Did I just say that out loud? Fuck my kismat. Bua's eyes widened, and Mummy looked like she could strangle me right there. revaan bhaiya looked at me with 'you are done' expression.
Chachi spoke up. "Noor, you should be respectful. your bua is older than you."
"Jii chachi, sorry bua," I muttered before leaving and walking into the courtyard. "Noor!" a voice called from behind me stand infront of the pond. I turned and saw Revaan bhaiya walking towards me. "Kya yaar, Noor. Ab aise hi ladayi karegi kya sabse?" (What Noor. Now will you fight with everyone like this?) Revaan bhaiya said, grinning.
"Mujhse poochho mat. Har koi bas taunt maarne ka chance dhundhta rehta hai," (Don't ask me. Everyone is just looking for a chance to taunt.) I replied.
He laughed. "it's okay madam engineer." i rolled my eyes, "By the way, tujhe ek serious sawaal poochhna tha." (by the way i wanted to ask you a serious question) he spoke.
I raised an eyebrow. "Ab kya?" Just then, we heard Papa talking in hushed tones to Chachu at the back of the courtyard. I edged towards the wall, trying to eavesdrop, but Revaan bhaiya grabbed my arm to stop me.
"Shh, chup raho," I whispered, shooting him a glare before turning. papa spoke, "Yeah, I think we should settle her too with Vrishaan," settle who?
"who is vrishaan?" i whispered to revaan bhaiya. "anvika's fiance, akshath's brother" he whispered back."What do you think they mean by 'settle her with Vrishaan'?" he whispered. I shook my head, "I have no idea. But I don't like the sound of it."
chacha continued, "It's perfect. Anvika and Akshath are getting married, so why not Noor and Vrishaan? It'll be a double wedding!"
"MARRIAGE?" I shouted, my hand instinctively flying to cover my mouth as I realized the volume of my outburst. I glanced nervously at Papa, who had turned towards me, "noor? you were eavesdropping?"
