"Hey Rin! Look over there!"

"What is it? Oh...a cat!"

"Not so fast or she'll run away. You have to crouch down slowly and extend your hand. Like this..."

"She's coming!"

"Shh, not so loud..."

"Hmm... *giggles*"

"What?"

"You love cats, don't you?"

"... they are such independent and beautiful creatures. Each cat has its own character, which makes them so unique. They like their owners but also need their own space. Only when you give them that space and make them feel like they can be independent beings, do they truly blossom... so yes, I love cats very much..."

"W-what?!"

"Are you awake again?"

I flinched as I recognized the voice. I was no longer lying on the cold floor...I was covered up with blanket and in bed.

It was warm.

Slowly, I sat up, my eyes adjusting to the bright light of the dawning morning that streamed through the windows, bathing the room in a warm rosy yellow. Choso stood by the wall, watching me for a while as I slowly gathered myself in bed. He let some time pass before reaching for a white plastic bag that lay on the dresser beside him and slowly approached me. My heart beat faster as I, still dazed from sleep, noticed his approaching steps and rush further back on the bed until my back hit the headboard. He stopped in front of the bed and held out a small water bottle to me. Frozen and confused, I stared at the bottle for a few seconds.

"Take it," Choso said cold, bringing the bottle closer to my face. I nodded and finally took it from him. He set the bag on the floor in front of the bed without saying a word and headed back to the door. I leaned over the edge of the bed to see what was in the bag.

"Onigiris? A small lunchbox with rice and... looks like something sweet I guess?"

I leaned back again and looked at the water bottle in my hand when something occurred to me. "Wait!" I called after him as he was almost out of the room. He stopped but didn't turn around.
"I... I need to go to the bathroom."
This time he turned around and looked at me questioningly. I took a deep breath and repeated bluntly, "I need to go to the bathr-"

"I understood you," he interrupted me, his gaze indicating a bucket in the corner of the room.
"No! That's out of question," I said, disgusted, shaking my head.
"You have no other choice..." he replied, turning back to leave the room.
"Then I'll just piss on the floor," I said,pissed of crossing my arms over my chest.
After a long uncomfortable silence, he exhaled in annoyance and replied, "Then come with me." Choso opened the door and led me into the hallway. I followed him, it was a good opportunity to get to know the building and my situation.

The dark windowless hallway was lined with locked or broken doors. The house seemed to have been abandoned for a long time... the rooms were either empty or filled with broken furniture. We reached the bathroom. Choso stepped aside and showed me a small room with the dustiest toilet I had ever seen. Insects scattered as I entered the tiny chamber and closed the door behind me. A flickering light provided sparse illumination. Grateful for the small comfort, I relieved myself.

On the way back, I asked without thinking, "Where do you sleep, anyway?"
No answer, as expected.
After a while he broke the silence, "I don't sleep."
Surprised by the unexpected answer, I muttered quietly, "Yeah, you look like it too..."
Back in my room and alone, the door again locked behind me, I noticed that dusk was setting in. Through the window I watched as the sun disappeared behind the mountains and the previously dark red clouds turned into a deep blue. I leaned out the window a bit further when suddenly something dart right past my nose. I screamed and lost my balance, falling backward onto the hard wooden floor. I quickly covered my mouth as I saw black feathers flying in through the open window.

Mei Mei?!
