I turned around and looked at Mr Williams, who seemed to have just come upstairs.
He's wearing a black shirt and black pants, just like last time." I've just finished mopping. Mr Williams, do you need help with anything?" I ask him as I turn to look at him.
He smiles at me as he puts his glasses on his face so he can see better. The dark blue frames of his glasses fit him perfectly. "If you can, sweetheart go and check how Aiden is doing and also please sit with him for a while because there's a family coming over soon." He says softly and turns back to the steps to go downstairs.
I pick up the mop and start walking back to the storage room. I turn and look at the white hallway when I get to it.
The light from the windows doesn't reach here.Another family is coming and it's not past noon.
Death comes when it must and there's no one to stop it. We have learned to fear it and be terrified at the thought that it will come for us. But the truth is, even if it's painful, without death, life would be out of balance. We cannot live forever and that is the gift of life. When my time comes, I hope my last breath is one of relief.
He's just doing his job, and he's not evil. At least, that's what I like to think.
I stretch my sore body and close the door from the storage room. As soon as I hear the click of the lock, I start to leave.
I feel the sun on my face, take a deep breath and head down to the basement.I walk down the wooden steps and it starts to get dark.
The lamps that light up the place are the only light sources here. As I turn right, the huge silver door appears.
I take one last breath and open it."Hi Aiden," I say to the man who is focused on his work.
Aiden is the one who takes care of the bodies of the deceased. He does the hardest job in here.
His dad was the one who taught him everything he knows before he died. He fought cancer for years. In the end, he chose to go home and stay there, as he passed away peacefully.
"Hey kiddo, how was class today?" He says softly.
Once again, he was calling me that on purpose. He is twenty-eight years old, which means he is seven years older than me. His father had been friends with Mr Williams for years and when he died, he took Aiden to work without a second thought.
I turn to look at him. He was wearing a white medical robe. The gloves on his hands were tight on him and he had his sleeves rolled up. His dark skin showed along with his tattoos His long hair was in a bun and the mask on his face left only his eyes visible to me.
"Okay," I reply and sit down in the chair next to the desk.
He is working at a large metal table in the middle of the room. That's where they put the deceased and get them ready. Behind him were the large coolers where we put the dead to delay their decomposition.
