the party

I wanted to be right about the world. I wanted to know what people think and what they're going to say. How judgmental they are and how everyone is dying inside.

Obviously, I didn't know anything about the world. I'm just a small speck of dust.

Violet looked like an angel as she glided down the stairs in her white party dress. I looked up at her taking it all in.

She took my hands in hers and gave them a tight little squeeze.

"Emmy, you're zoning out again!"

She chuckled as I fought for air and one word to say. "You look great."

Her smile was contagious. She tucked a piece of her brown hair behind her ear.

"Ready to go?"

"Absolutely, " I took a deep breath and headed out the door to immediately get met with mud all over my dress. Kai stepped out of his car to see the damage he caused.

"You couldn't see that puddle?" I raged with all I had in me.

"You still look good, though," he grinned.

"Kai, you are a parasite!"

We both turn to look at Violet. After silence fell for a second before we all start to laugh hysterically.

"Do you have time to go change?" Now I could tell he felt bad by his sheepish demeanor.

"I mean, it's really not that bad."

Violet checked her watch. "We're already pretty late."

"Let's just go. I can clean up once we're there."

It was dark. Not too many street lights on this part of the road. I could hear the tires squeak from the wet road.

"Can we put on some music?" I was bored and cramped up in the backseat next to all of Kai's suit cases.

"No," he said."Music disturbs the flow." Violet rolled her eyes and turned the radio on anyway.

"You two have no respect for me!"

We both jokingly threw flower pedals at him. "Boo! No cry babies."

"Emmy, you suck."

"Hey, Violet was in on it too." Violet stuck her tongue out at me from the front seat. "And why do you have so many suitcases?"

He paused for a moment.

"I'm in between homes right now."

"I'm sorry, Kai," She spoke in a soft voice.

"We're here for you," I add on as I reach up to touch his shoulder.

"Thank you for being a friend."

Kai didn't know how to sing. He did it for fun. He sang like his heart was on the line. Violet looked back at me.

"Emmy, you're crying."

"I have allergies," I responded.

"I have allergies..." he mocked me in a nasally tone. "I think Emmy needs the cone of shame."

"I threw that away." Violet shivered in disgust.

"Why would you do that?"

I rolled my eyes. As I listened to them bicker about the moldy ice cream cone of shame, I looked up at the stars. Except, there were no stars only a black sheet of nothing.

We halted to a red light. A car came up beside us and rolled their windows down.

"Do you know where you're heading?"
