Grosvenor Square, 1813. Dearest reader, the time has come to place our bets for the upcoming social season. Consider the household of the Baron Featherington. Three misses foisted upon the marriage market like sorrowful sows by their tasteless... tactless mama. Far better odds might exist in the household of the widowed Viscountess Bridgerton. A shockingly prolific family, noted for its bounty of perfectly handsome sons and perfectly beautiful daughters. How very perfect, indeed! Or perhaps the odds are in the household of the Baron and Baroness Beaumont. They should pray considering it is their only daughter, no room for mistakes when theirs no second chances.

"Tighter!"

"Mother please," Emmeline whined.

"If you're talking it means you still have room in there to breathe, tighter Anne!"

Anne, Emmeline personal handmaid reluctantly pulls harder on the strings tightening the corset.

Emmeline winced at the feeling of the air leaving her body, and when she breathed back in she knew for certain the entirety of her mid section would be littered with bruises.

"Mother is this all really necessary?"

"Of course child, what would the Queen think of you if not? Then no man or noble man for that matter, will ever desire you enough to court you let alone marry you and then my whole life will be ruined and you my dear shall be a spinster!"

"I beg you not to worry as much mama for it is only my first season," she tries to reason with her.

"I don't think you're quite understanding," bending slightly lower to look her daughter right in the eyes with her notorious hard glare ''don't ruin this for me.''

She then straightens back to her regular height and puts on her even more notorious fake smile.

"Now hurry we must make haste."

After finishing getting ready Emmeline, with the help from the maids exist the house stepping to the carriage that's taking her to the moment she's been waiting for her entire life.

She pauses for a moment seeing her good friend Daphne strut out looking absolutely extraordinary. She smiled and waved at her as Daphne reciprocated the gesture.

As Daphne walks into her carriage Emmeline is still stood before hers as she spots someone else.

Those caramel eyes locking with her mahogany ones.

Adam Bridgerton.

Younger fraternal twin of Viscount Anthony Bridgerton.

Now Emmeline Beaumont may have something to confess.

1 week before the social season had begun the two found themselves sharing a tiny kiss.

At the lake while Mama was occupied gossiping with other members of the ton, Emmeline found herself wandering off to a more secluded area covered by trees.

That's where she found her best friend's brother, sitting reading a... book?

A sight she never thought she'd see.

You see Adam Bridgerton much like his twin, was well acquainted to the ton as a rake.

So when she found him in this predicament, reading not only a book but a Jane Austen book. Emmeline was a bit more than surprised to say the least.

Long story short, Emmeline started to understand Adam in a way she never thought she would.

Of course she was very weary of being unchaperoned with a man, let alone someone with a reputation such as his. But she couldn't find it in herself to turn and walk away, she wanted to find out what she blindly missed before.

Adam started to get this overwhelming feeling that he could trust her and for the first time in his life spoke to someone about his feelings. Conversation flowed and she slowly got Adam to reveal what he was doing hiding, reading one of his 'all time favourites'.

He started to express to her how he comes here to run away with his thoughts and starts expressing the struggles he faces being in -his words- 'irrelevant' to his family.

This was the very first time Adam saw her for what she was this season. A woman. Adam had never felt more understood as she digested every word he spoke to her -being Anthony's younger twin he always felt unheard in his shadow and her company was extremely refreshing. She had a way of making you feel like you're the only voice that she'd ever heard, flaunting a maturity he's never seen in her. The more he looked at her while speaking his thoughts the more he couldn't help but notice how breathtakingly stunning she really was, a strange unfamiliar feeling erupted in his stomach one he's never felt looking at a woman before. Adam thought most women to be beautiful but there was something ethereal about her he hadn't seen in any other woman.

He tried to resist but couldn't help himself anymore as his eyes keep drifting down to her soft, plump lips he suddenly stops speaking and leans his face down to connect with hers. And to his surprise Emmeline uncertainly does the same.

For a mere second.

The reality of the situation suddenly hits her as she quickly scrambles to her feet cautiously looking in every direction to make sure no one saw even a glimpse of the two of them close together. Goodness, what was she thinking Adam Bridgerton is a rake she was sure this is how he charmed all his lady's.

Afraid of being labelled a fair cyprian before she even made her debut, mother would never look at her again, she fled as quickly as possible in search for her mama.

However, not before sparing Adam a final glance.

Present time, those eyes still reaching for each other.

Adam cut the connection by a cheeky wink and a matching smirk.

"Rake." She mumbles to herself as her servants help her climb into the carriage.
