Haruki's POV
My childhood was almost bad, but my big brother had saved me. Why? Because he, despite being the favorite of my late mother, defended me without a second thought. And plus, my late mother didn't like me. Why is that? Because she blamed me after my father left us. It wasn't my fault, but my mom hated me, nonetheless. She didn't care if I scored high in school or had an achievement. She loves Yami more than me.
But Yami wasn't a spoiled kid as you might think. He cared for me. He even gave me sweets without our mom's knowledge.
Then, just 2 years ago, when I was about to be a middle school graduate, my mom abused me physically and verbally for being the reason why her marriage was ruined. But Yami came to the rescue and hit my mom for doing that. Mom was angry at him for defending me. "You ungrateful child..."
"That's it, mom..." Yami was cold at her, "...I am disowning you. You're no mom to me."
I was surprised to see that, and my mom was shocked to hear that.
She tried to cling to him, but Yami just punched her in the stomach hard. "Get off of me, filthy woman!"
Mom was taken aback by his act of rebelliousness. "Why...Why are you doing this to me? I did so much for you to be my perfect child."
"No one's perfect!" my older brother shouted back. "Not even sis or you!"
Mom now felt betrayed by her own son. "No...No.."
After that, Yami helped me stand up and grabbed my hand. "Come on, sis, let's leave. Let's get out of here." He then dragged me out of the house as my mom begged him not to leave her alone in that house. She did that with despair and tears, but Yami ignored her and didn't look back.
He then took me somewhere in the city. "Um, big brother?" I looked at him as we walked together.
"Yes?" he replied back.
"Are you sure about leaving Mom?"
"Yes, because I am sick of her treating you like this."
We then stopped under a sheltered bus stop, and Yami looked at me. "Let's stay at an internet café until we get our own place and cut all contact with Mom."
Looking at him like that, I nodded in agreement. "Yes, okay."
"Good." Yami smiled back. "Now we will live in peace at last."
And so, we went to an internet café to stay there for a few nights until we could find a place to live somewhere far away.
Luckily for us, a relative of ours was about to move out, so he offered us to live at his old house west of the city for free. He also offered to do the paperwork so he could transfer the deeds to the house to us. In response to that, we accepted it, and the day before my first day in high school, we moved to that place together, and our relative had finally moved away. We lived in that modest house ever since, and we cut all contact with our mother.
Our decision to cut our mom off didn't affect us at all, and even though Mom died of declining health due to grief a few months later, we didn't feel a speck of sympathy for her either. We are now free from her control over us, and Yami also started working part-time so he could pay the bills. Also, even though we were entitled to inherit Mom's house, we decided to decline it and let the bulldozers demolish it instead because it was nothing but a place of bad memories for me. And that's how and why I considered him as my guardian.
