Back in the familiar chaos of the MMB newsroom, I felt a surge of triumphant energy. Everyone stared, their surprise probably a mix of me getting into the interrogation room and somehow walking out of it alive. I, on the other hand, was practically buzzing.
Thrilling memories of the day's events flickered in my mind – the tension in the interrogation room, the chilling words of Jeon, and the unexpected encounter with the Chief, Seo Ji-hoon.
Settling into my chair, I was ready to weave the day's events into a story but Just as my fingers flew over the keyboard, my ever-serious senior, Namjoon, sidled up to me, a cup of coffee precariously balanced in his hand. "Back already? I figured they wouldn't let just anyone waltz into an interrogation room."
I smirked. "Let's just say I have a way with people," I replied, leaving the exact nature of that 'way' ambiguous. Namjoon snorted, then did a double-take, realizing I might have been more literal than he thought. "You actually know Ji-hoon? How?"
The near-disaster with his coffee gave me a mischievous chuckle. "Let's just say things happened," I said, expertly dodging his questions.
"Although, maybe next time you should wear something darker, Sunbae. You do have a reputation for being a walking stain magnet."
Namjoon grumbled about his clumsiness as I playfully swatted him away, finally turning back to my throbbing computer screen. But before I could lose myself in the day's events, Namjoon dropped another bombshell.
"Oh, and Mr. Min wanted to see you," he said casually, before disappearing back into the newsroom frenzy.
I groaned, the thrill of the day replaced with a wave of apprehension.
Stepping into the boss's office, I offered a strained smile. Mr. Min, the editor-in-chief, eyed me expectantly.
"How'd the interview go, Ms. Hwang?" he asked.
"I got into the interrogation room, like we planned," I began, then hesitated."But you didn't get the information you needed?" he scoffed. "Not exactly," I said. "I learned some things, but they're not for public release."
"That's useless," he snapped. "Here's the plan. I hear you know the Chief. You need to go back in and talk to the killer." "But sir-" I protested.
"Look, Hwang," he interrupted, "either you use your connections and get this story, or I give it to Soojin."
Dread filled me. Soojin, the new reporter, would do anything for a scoop, she's known for her bitchy acts.
"I can't just ask the Chief to let me back in," I stammered. Mr. Min's gaze turned steely. "Then find another way. This is your story, Hwang. Don't mess it up."
Ji-hoon's warning about staying out of the interrogation room echoed in my mind. But I was determined to get this story. Begging Ji-hoon seemed like my only option.
