I'm sitting in a corridor with 20 other boys when a man enter the room.
« Hello guys ! I'm Jason, the casting director of Billy Elliot. We gonna call you one after the other. You just have to show us what you are able to do, then we will ask you a few questions. Ok ? Then you will go back with your parents before the second step of this audition. Have you got any questions ? »
No hands raise. Jason threw us a friendly smile then ask the first kid, Fred Alistair, to follow him. After about an hour, it was my turn to be call in the audition room. Jason and two womans, Carry and Nicola, where sitting behind a desk. They smile at me and ask me to present myself.
« Hello » I start shyly « My name is Duncan Bishop, I'm 9 years old and I'm from Oxford. »
« Great » says Jason « Can you tell us your height and weight please ? »
« I'm 4 feet high and 31 kg »
« Thanks. Have you prepare a routine for us ? » ask Carry.
I give them my music and start dancing. During the last two weeks, Mrs Baker have teach me a special routine she has created for the audition. It was a mix of breakdancing and gymnastic on I Want To Break Free by Queen.
I finish my last flip as the music end. Jason, Carry and Nicola smile at me.
« Great ! » say Jason. « Now I'm gonna ask a few question ok ? Nothing hard. Just answer honestly. » I shake my head. « Well, when did you start dancing ? »
« I was 4. »
« Ok ... You show us breakdance and gymnastic, did you know some other type of dancing ? »
« Herrr ... No... » I answer, a bit ashame
« No problem, stay cool. » he smile « We don't ask you to know every thing before you enter our training program you know. We just ask this question to know what work we will have to do with you if you're selected. »
They ask me a few more questions about my dance training then they let me leave. My mum was waiting for me in the next room. She ask me how the audition went then we waited for the other boys to pass there audition.
The 3 judges enter the room where we were and Jason explain us the next step :
« We now gonna annonce who are selected for a second audition in 2 weeks in London. If you are not selected that doesnt mean you are not talented it just mean that we are searching for really specific abilities . We gonna call you one by one, parents and boys. »
I was the 5th to be call. My mum and I enter the room where I had pass my audition. The jugdes where smilling. We seat and Jason announce me that I was allowed to go to London. I was so happy ! I know I will need to work really hard the next couple of week but it was really a good feeling.
