The next day dawned clear and bright, a stark contrast to the tumultuous events that had unfolded in the Red Keep. Aegon dressed with care, knowing the importance of the council meeting ahead. As he made his way to the council chamber, he steeled himself for the reactions and challenges that would surely come with his new position as Viserys's heir.
The council chamber buzzed with the low murmur of conversation as the members took their seats. Viserys, already seated at the head of the table, greeted each lord with a nod as they entered. Aegon took a deep breath and entered, feeling the weight of many eyes upon him.
Viserys began the meeting with a few routine matters before clearing his throat and addressing the council. "My lords, I have an important announcement to make. As you know, the matter of succession has been a topic of much debate. After careful consideration, I have decided to name my brother, Aegon, as my heir."
A murmur of surprise and curiosity swept through the room. Aegon glanced at Rhaenyra, searching for any sign of her reaction. She sat still and composed, her face a mask of neutrality. If she felt anything about the announcement, she did not show it.
Otto Hightower was the first to speak. "Your Grace, with all due respect, Aegon has been away from court for many years. Many do not know him or his intentions. He is unpredictable."
Aegon felt a surge of anger. He stood, meeting Otto's gaze with steady eyes. "My intentions are clear, Lord Otto. They are with my family and the good of the kingdom. I seek to serve and protect our realm, just as my brother has done."
Lord Lyonel Strong nodded thoughtfully. "It is wise to have a strong and capable heir. Aegon's presence and commitment to his family and the realm are reassuring."
Lord Corlys Velaryon leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with interest. "Aegon's lineage and strength promise strong heirs for the future. His presence can only benefit the realm and secure its prosperity."
Ser Harrold, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, added his voice to the support. "Aegon has shown that he is loyal and cares for others. His return to court is a boon for us all."
Otto, still skeptical, changed the topic slightly. "What about this new land, Lagharbor? It is uncharted and could be risky."
Aegon nodded, understanding the concern. "I will visit Lagharbor from time to time, ensuring its development and safety. When the time comes, I will make one of my children the heir to that new land. It will be a stronghold for the kingdom and a testament to our dynasty's reach."
Lord Corlys's eyes lit up with a gleam of ambition. "That is a sound plan, Prince Aegon. I have ideas that could turn Lagharbor into a thriving port and stronghold, benefiting the entire realm."
Viserys looked around the table, seeing the nods of agreement from his council. He smiled, the decision clearly bringing some measure of peace to his mind. "Then it is settled. Aegon will be my heir, and we will support his plans for Lagharbor."
With the major matters resolved, Viserys dismissed the meeting. The lords rose and filed out, some casting curious glances at Aegon, others offering nods of approval. Aegon felt a mix of relief and anticipation. The road ahead was still uncertain, but he had taken the first step.
As the lords and council members dispersed, Aegon noticed Rhaenyra quietly slipping out of the chamber. He felt a need to speak with her, to ensure that his new position would not drive a wedge between them. Quickening his pace, he followed her out into the hall.
"Rhaenyra," he called softly.
She paused, turning to face him with a calm, composed expression. "Uncle."
He took a deep breath, searching for the right words. "How do you feel about all this? About me being named heir?"
Rhaenyra's eyes softened slightly, a hint of vulnerability peeking through her regal demeanor. "I think it is a sensible decision, uncle. Daemon is... impulsive. You, on the other hand, have shown a steady hand and a clear mind."
Aegon's concern was genuine as he continued, "If you do not agree with this decision, I will turn it down. I value our relationship and your opinion above all else."
Rhaenyra regarded him for a moment, a small smile touching her lips. "You are kind, uncle, but there is no need for that. I support you as heir. It is a better choice than Daemon, and I believe you will serve the realm well."
Relief washed over Aegon, and he smiled warmly at her. "Thank you, Rhaenyra. Your support means more to me than you know."
She nodded, a sense of understanding passing between them. "Just promise me one thing."
"Anything."
"Promise me you will remember our family, and the values we hold dear."
Aegon took her hand, squeezing it gently. "I promise."
They stood there for a moment longer, an unspoken bond reaffirming their mutual respect and commitment to their family. Finally, Aegon nodded and turned to leave, feeling a renewed sense of purpose and confidence.
As he walked through the corridors, his thoughts turned to Vaerla. He made his way to her study chamber, peeking through the partially open door. Inside, Vaerla sat at a small desk, her brow furrowed in concentration as she listened to her tutor. The sight brought a smile to Aegon's face.
He decided not to interrupt her lesson. Instead, he watched for a few moments, filled with pride and hope for her future. Quietly, he turned and made his way back through the castle.
Aegon wandered the halls, reflecting on the events of the past days. The burden of his new role was heavy, but he felt ready to bear it. With his family's support and the counsel of trusted allies, he believed he could navigate the complexities ahead.
As he reached his chambers, the weight of the day's events finally settled on him. He entered, closing the door behind him, and sat down heavily on the edge of his bed. The enormity of his new responsibilities loomed large, but he drew strength from the knowledge that he was not alone in this journey.
With a deep breath, Aegon lay back, his thoughts turning once more to the future. He would lead with wisdom and strength, guided by the promise he made to his brother and the support of his family. The path was uncertain, but he was ready to walk it, one step at a time.
