The school ground buzzed with anticipation as students and teachers alike gathered for the annual sports day activities. Banners fluttered in the breeze, and the air was filled with the sound of chatter and laughter. Students were instructed to line up according to their own classes, starting from students of Class 1-1 standing in the far left and students of Class 3-4 ending in the far right.
Wonyoung stood in line with her other classmates, her eyes scanning her surroundings, trying to catch a glimpse of the senior that had been occupying her mind since her first day of high school. For the past two weeks, she didn't get to interact much with him due to how busy they were in perfecting their own dance covers during club sessions. Aside from greeting each other, she couldn't get a chance to talk with him ever since. Well, maybe she did buy him chocolate milk before their club sessions started but that's about it. Even during breaks, she only managed to admire him from afar.
Wonyoung squinted her eyes as she covered her face from direct sunlight. She immediately caught his tall figure standing several lines away from hers and smiled to herself. Although he was wearing the same PE uniform as the other students, he looked especially ethereal under the sun, further highlighting his beautiful facial features. As expected, he looks more handsome day by day, she affirmed.
"What are looking at?" Jiwon asked, noticing that her friend has not been paying attention to the principal's opening speech and was looking at a specific direction for a few minutes.
Wonyoung blinked, returning her attention to her friend. "Oh, nothing. I was just thinking about something," she smiled, a tint of pink rising in her cheeks.
Jiwon raised an eyebrow, a smirk forming on her lips as she followed Wonyoung's line of sight. "Ah~ I see," she teased, but decided to refrain from pressing further as the principal's voice boomed over the loudspeaker, signalling the start of the first event. "Alright, everyone, let's begin with the tug of war competition! Class 1-1 versus Class 1-2, please step forward!"
Hearing the announcement, everyone, except those mentioned, went to the bleachers, some sitting while some went to other places such as the cafeteria, library, or classrooms. As Wonyoung's class hasn't yet to be called, she and Jiwon sat on the grass under the tree, watching the ongoing competition while she practiced her dance moves on her seat. Her eyes occasionally glancing between the game and Sunghoon, who sat on the bleachers.
"When is the performance again? I forgot," Jiwon asked, her eyes squinting under the scorching sun as she watched Wonyoung do her small moves.
"It's right after lunch," Wonyoung replied, her eyes briefly drifting to the match happening in front of them. "I still have a bit of time to practice."
Jiwon nodded, leaning on the tree behind them and closed her eyes, conserving her energy whenever she has the time. "Good, I'm sure you'll do great later. Can't believe you won't be catching any break after the dance."
Wonyoung giggled, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "It's okay. Besides, it doesn't sound as bad as you make it to be. I can still take a short break before relay starts. I think it will be fun!"
As the tug of war competition continued, cheers and laughter filled the air. Wonyoung watched as Class 1-1 pulled with all their might, their faces red with effort. Despite the intense competition, there was an undeniable sense of camaraderie and school spirit.
Suddenly, the whistle blew, signalling the end of the match. Class 1-1 erupted in victorious cheers, while Class 1-2 clapped and patted each other on the back for a good effort. The principal's voice crackled over the loudspeaker again.
