''you fool.''
A sickening crack reverberated the now desolate village as a cough involuntarily spluttered out off me. With the amount of blows he's given me, I couldn't tell whether it was my lungs or perhaps my own heart that broke.
Meekly looking up, I saw the outline of his shadow looming over me like a deity — omnipotent and malicious — slithering and hasty appendages travelled across the grass to coil around my ankle. Instinctively, a pained yelp escaped my lips as the thick liquid dripping off his tentacles tainted my skin and burned through it like sheer paper.
''quiet you insolent human! had you been more thoughtful with what you tamper with this wouldn't have happened—''
I felt myself lifted, blood rushing like a waterfall to my head, causing my already exhausted eyelids to be tempted by sleep as his glowering glare ripped through me before he snarled.
''—but no, you're like the rest of your kind - simple-minded and utterly foolish!''
I met the grass face first once again, thrown like a careless toy with an owner that was too bored to enjoy it. Oh how easily my bones shattered. Yet.. I couldn't bring myself to care. He could kill me, yet.. the adrenaline that would usually course through my veins was nonexistent. Maybe this was just the end.
As my thoughts consumed me, I heard the sound of shuffling and once again a sickening crack as screams involuntarily pierced the air.
A sigh of disappointment, before I was met with.. curiosity? His appendages prodded my back, almost inquisitively.
''and yet despite your all too human nature, you are now my kin. both bonded by the negative energy that flows through our vei— no. that wouldn't be correct. i don't have veins. well, bonded by negativity. perhaps you may be my.. right hand of sorts?''
He offered, but I knew better. That was the tone of someone who owned power and relished in cruelty. This wasn't an ask, but an order.
''Do I get a choice?''
My rhetorical question ensued a wholehearted rumble of laughter that sparked from deep inside his chest, one that was tinged with malevolence as he curtly replied, I could swear his spit even landed on my neck.
''of course not human. your choice was as good as gone when you ate that godforsaken apple.''
Silence; before he spoke again, his appendages wrapped my limbs, albeit.. their grip was much more considerate as I was placed back on my wobbly feet. Ironically enough, I was taller than the goopy skeleton and as much as I would love to hold the fact over his head, the turquoise glare he emitted gave me the second thought not to.
''will you stare at me all day or will you try to amount to something? hurry up, time is wasting.''
He snapped, talk about someone who had their panties twisted.
''Damn humans and their foolishness..''
He muttered in disdain, but surprisingly the way he glared at me.. it was different compared to the murderous intent I saw when he tore through the flesh of my fellow man and villagers.. but, at the same time.. this was a new beginning.
With a wobble, I pivoted on my foot and limply followed along to a new destiny.
