23. Silent Gaps

It had been weeks since Gabriella and Leon had started texting again, and though their conversations were often brief, there was a sense of connection in each message. At first, things had seemed promising, with Leon's texts frequent and warm, though still carrying that characteristic coolness of his. But as the days went by, Gabriella noticed a shift. The texts from Leon started to dwindle, becoming less frequent, and when they did come, they were shorter, more to the point. The warmth that had once been there now seemed distant.

Gabriella didn't know what had changed. Had something happened? Was he busy? She couldn't help but wonder. Their conversations had been a small source of light during her long days, something to look forward to. But now, the silence between their texts felt more like a weight, something heavy she couldn't quite shake off.

She had tried to be patient, telling herself that maybe it was just work, or maybe Leon needed space. But she couldn't help but feel a little hurt. Why hadn't he reached out more? Why the sudden coldness? She even convinced herself that maybe she had said or done something wrong. It was hard to tell with Leon. He was a mystery she had yet to unravel.

Gabriella sat at her desk one evening, scrolling through her phone, her finger hovering over his name in the text messages app. She was debating whether or not to send a message. Should she confront him? Should she ask what was going on? But she stopped herself. She didn't want to seem needy, or worse, desperate. She wasn't sure what she wanted from him anyway, but the uncertainty gnawed at her.

She finally sent a simple text, one that had been on her mind for days:

"Hey, Leon. How's everything going?"

It was short, not asking too much, but enough to test the waters. She waited. The seconds felt like minutes, and then the minutes like hours. She tried to busy herself with something else, but her thoughts kept drifting back to her phone. When it finally buzzed, Gabriella jumped, only to see a single, simple response:

"Everything's fine. Just busy with work."

It was as if the words were carefully chosen to offer no more than what was necessary. No extra details, no warmth, just... fine. Gabriella tried to shake off the sinking feeling in her chest.

"I understand," she replied, hoping to keep the conversation going. "Work can be a lot. How's the case going?"

She waited again, her heart beating faster this time. It was as though she had to pull the words from him, and that only made her more anxious. When his response came, it was brief, almost curt:

"It's fine. Nothing to worry about."

Gabriella stared at the screen for a long time, the silence from his side feeling louder than the words themselves. She knew that Leon wasn't one for small talk, but this felt different. She had grown used to his coldness, but this was something else. Something distant. And she wasn't sure how much longer she could take it.

She put the phone down with a sigh, her heart heavy with uncertainty. There had been a time when she had thought that maybe, just maybe, things were moving forward between them. But now, with each passing day, it seemed like the distance between them was only growing. And Gabriella had no idea if she should keep waiting for him to come back around or if she needed to let go.

As much as she hated to admit it, she knew one thing for sure: the silence spoke volumes.

Gabriella stared at the phone in her hands, her mind swirling with a thousand thoughts. She had hoped for something more than just cold, distant replies. It was hard to ignore the nagging feeling in her chest, a mixture of confusion, frustration, and, if she was honest with herself, hurt. She thought about everything that had happened between her and Leon—the night at his penthouse, their texts, the strange pull between them that she couldn't quite explain. And now, it felt like everything was slipping through her fingers.

Was this just a phase? she wondered. Did he lose interest, or was it something else?

She couldn't help but think back to their last conversation before the texting became sparse. Leon had told her he didn't do one-night stands, that he didn't want anything casual. She had believed him, had hoped that maybe he felt something more. But now, with each passing day, it felt like he was closing off more and more. She didn't want to jump to conclusions, but the silence felt like an answer in itself.

She glanced at her phone again, tempted to send another message, to ask if he was okay, if there was something wrong. But part of her didn't want to seem like she was chasing him. She didn't want to be the one to keep pushing, keep trying to make things happen when it felt like he was pulling away.

Maybe he's just busy, she thought, trying to rationalize it. Maybe he really does have a lot on his plate with work.

But deep down, Gabriella knew it wasn't just about work. She could feel the shift, the subtle change in the way he was treating her. Leon, for all his coldness, had never been this distant. There was something more going on, something she wasn't being told.

Maybe it's me, she thought, her heart sinking. Maybe I'm not what he expected, or maybe I said something wrong. Maybe... maybe he never really wanted this at all.

She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to push the doubts out of her mind. She had spent enough time questioning herself. What mattered now was what she wanted.

I can't keep waiting for him to reach out, Gabriella thought. I can't keep wondering what's going on in his head. I deserve more than that. I deserve someone who wants to be with me, who's as invested in this as I am.

Her thoughts swirled in a whirlwind of emotions—confusion, hurt, and a deep sense of longing. She had tried to convince herself that she wasn't expecting too much, that she wasn't looking for more than what he could give. But the truth was, she did want more. She wanted the certainty, the clarity of knowing where they stood. And right now, it felt like she was standing on the edge, unsure whether to take the leap or walk away.

Taking a deep breath, Gabriella made a decision. She would stop waiting for him to text first. She would stop wondering why he was pulling away. It wasn't healthy for her to be so consumed by uncertainty, especially when she didn't know if Leon was even going to meet her halfway.

With a final glance at her phone, Gabriella put it down on the table and stood up. She had to focus on herself now. She needed to stop waiting for Leon to show up in the way she had hoped. If he wanted her, he would have to come to her. And if he didn't, well, then it was time to let go.

Gabriella wasn't going to wait in the shadows any longer. She deserved someone who would stand beside her, not someone who left her in the dark. And with that, she walked away from the phone, from the doubts, and from the uncertainty—at least for now.
