It had been two days since Gabriella had received the news that her life was about to change forever. The doctor had insisted on three days of rest, and now, with the usual rhythm of her life paused, she found herself suspended in a strange stillness. The house felt too quiet, too empty—her parents were out, Charlotte at school, and her brother and sister-in-law abroad. The soft pink hues of the early evening sky pressed against the windowpane, a gentle reminder that life went on, even when hers felt suspended in uncertainty.

Gabriella sank into the couch, arms wrapped around her knees, and let the weight of everything press down on her chest. Shock. Fear. A hint of excitement. But underneath it all was a deeper, quieter worry: the growing distance between her and Leon.

Since that night—the night that had changed everything—he had been different. Texts that had once carried warmth now felt clipped, deliberate, distant. Leon's messages had become like icy fragments, polite but carefully restrained. Gabriella tried to rationalize it, tried to tell herself that he was busy, or that maybe he was processing his own feelings. Yet the gnawing doubt lingered: Is he pulling away? Did I misread him?

Her fingers hovered over her phone before she finally pressed Ashley's contact. The familiar name brought a small sense of comfort. Maybe talking to someone who knew her inside out would untangle some of the mess in her head.

The phone rang twice before Ashley's voice, warm and alive, broke through the silence.

"Gabriella? Hey, how are you doing?"

Gabriella let out a shaky breath. "I'm... okay. Just... trying to figure things out."

There was a softness in Ashley's tone that immediately drew Gabriella in. "What's going on? You sound off."

She closed her eyes for a moment, letting the anxiety rise and fall like the tide. "Ashley... I'm pregnant. The doctor said I'm about two months along."

Silence on the other end. Then a burst of excitement, disbelief, and concern all at once. "Wait, what? Gabriella, that's... that's huge! How are you feeling? Are you okay?"

Gabriella swallowed, the lump in her throat refusing to go away. "I... I don't know. It's a lot to process. Part of me is happy, but the other part... scared. My life has been so... controlled, so carefully managed, and now..." She trailed off, voice trembling. "And then there's Leon. He's... distant. We haven't talked since that night, and I don't even know where I stand with him anymore."

Ashley's voice softened, full of understanding. "Gabriella... I know it's overwhelming. But Leon's probably just as scared as you are. He's not used to this kind of... emotional uncharted territory. But he cares about you. He wouldn't have kissed you if he didn't."

Gabriella felt a shiver run through her, the truth of Ashley's words pressing against the raw ache in her chest. "I just... I wish he would talk to me," she admitted, voice almost a whisper. "It feels like he's slipping away, and I don't know how to reach him."

"Give him time," Ashley said gently but firmly. "Leon isn't the type to process feelings overnight. But that doesn't mean he doesn't care. He's just... complicated, you know that better than anyone. Don't let his silence make you doubt yourself."

Gabriella nodded, though the ache in her chest didn't ease. She wanted to believe Ashley, to cling to the hope that Leon wasn't gone from her life. But the empty quiet of the apartment pressed down, and for a moment, she felt unbearably alone.

"I just have to... focus on myself," she murmured. "On the baby. And... my own future. I can't let myself get lost in wondering what he's thinking."

"Exactly," Ashley said. "You have people who love you, Gab. Your family, me... we're here. And Leon? He'll come around. He just needs his own time to realize what this means."

Gabriella drew in a long, shaky breath, her fingers tightening around the phone. "You're right. I'll try... I'll try to focus on what I can control."

"You'll figure it out," Ashley reassured her. "And Gab... you're not alone in this. Not now, not ever."

Hanging up, Gabriella sank deeper into the couch, eyes tracing the pink streaks fading into night. The world outside moved on, indifferent, but she felt something shift inside her—a quiet resolve, fragile but real. I can do this. I have to. And maybe... just maybe... Leon will find his way back too.

For the first time since the news, she allowed herself to close her eyes, to breathe, to imagine a future that was uncertain, yes—but not unwelcoming.

Whatever comes next... I am not facing it alone.

Gabriella heard the familiar click of the front door and the soft shuffle of footsteps before her parents appeared in the living room, Charlotte clinging to Eloise's side, chattering about her day at school. The warmth of their presence, the normalcy of home after days of uncertainty, brought a small, fragile comfort.

"Gabriella?" Eloise's voice was soft but firm, worry still lingering in her green eyes. "Are you feeling any better, sweetheart?"

Gabriella offered a small smile, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. "I'm... okay. Just resting, like the doctor said."

Pietro stepped forward, his hand brushing lightly against hers. "Did you... have a chance to talk to the father?" His voice was calm, careful, but Gabriella could hear the concern underneath every word.

She hesitated, heart fluttering. I haven't... I don't know what to say yet... The thought of talking to Leon made her stomach twist. His distance, his silence since that night—it had been almost unbearable. And now, with the knowledge growing inside her, the stakes felt impossibly high.

"I... haven't spoken to him yet," she admitted softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I wanted to... tell him first before I told anyone else."

Eloise's hand went to Gabriella's cheek, gentle and reassuring. "You don't have to rush, darling. This is a lot to take in, and you need to feel ready."

Charlotte, sensing the gravity in the room, piped up, her young voice steady despite her small frame. "Aunt Gabriella, it's going to be okay. We'll all help. But... maybe it's time he knows?"

Gabriella swallowed, nodding slightly. The truth was, she was terrified of his reaction. What if he pulled away completely? What if this was too much for him? And yet, part of her knew she couldn't keep it from him forever. He had a right to know—he deserved that much, and so did she.

Pietro drew a slow breath, stepping closer. "No matter what happens, Gab... you're not alone. You have us, your brother and Laura. You also have Charlotte and your crazy friend, Ashley. And you'll have him—or someone—supporting you. But first, you take care of yourself."

Gabriella nodded again, a lump forming in her throat. The words were simple, but they carried the weight of love and protection she hadn't realized she needed so desperately.

Eloise leaned down, brushing a kiss against her forehead. "Rest now, my love. Gather your strength. And when you're ready... you'll know what to do."

Charlotte hugged her tightly, whispering, "I promise we'll all be here, Aunt Gabriella."

Gabriella closed her eyes, letting their warmth and support settle over her, a shield against the storm of uncertainty raging in her mind. The thought of Leon still lingered, quiet but insistent, and she knew that eventually, she would have to face it. But for now, surrounded by the people who loved her, she allowed herself a moment of peace.

Whatever comes next... I won't face it alone.
