Chapter 2~ Sylus
I was the first one to leave class when the bell rang. Anara ran catch up to me walking swiftly down the hallway. Slowly students filtered out of the classrooms and walked to their lockers.
" Whats the matter Sylus? Usually your the last one to leave, and don't you want to chat with the new teacher, you were really close to Ms. Clims."
" I don't like her."
An incredulous look crossed her face. " What! She was awesome, she said she wasn't going to give us homework unless she really has to. Thats incredible. Your odd and all, but I know for a fact that you dislike homework as much as I do."
" She felt odd, like nothing was comfortable anymore in that room. With Ms. Clims everything felt safe and fun, even though she did give homework."
We walked into a room that could have easily passed for a World War 11 battle scene, the cafeteria was in complete chaos. Both Anara and I sat down at an empty table, except for one other person. The figure looked at us and his frown deepened.
" Ew, its you." He said
Smiles hit us all and we collapsed on the table giggling. Tipet was an interesting character, his face looked like that of a fox, sharp and angular, and his head a wild mess of orngish-red hair, and eyes that were basically orange. Tip was taller than almost anyone in school, standing at 6'5". He enjoyed wearing a lot of baggy jeans, which were not easy to find, and tight fitting nondescript t-shirts.
Anara was very different than Tip, as she stood at about 5'2", and smooth Asian features, like her dark eyes, as her family was originally from Vietnam. She had long shimmery black hair that hung to her shoulder blades.
Anara, besides the appearance, was about the scariest person I've ever met. She was know to disappear, and out of nowhere pop up again. Anara was freakily capable of memorizing everything and was seemingly divinely gifted in the ways of science and math. Tip's aditude watched his interests perfectly, his free absent-mindedness, matched his beautiful musical talent.
I was a different sort of disappearing act than Anara, I fit in because I was regular. My jaw line was more prominent, I had wide set shoulders, and I might be a little on the taller side at 6', but other than that I was very regular. My brown hair had an extreme amount of cowlicks, especially in the front, so I kept it short, and I enjoyed wearing easy t-shirts and shorts, I hated warm weather. The only thing odd about me was my eyes, they changed, daily. They had different swirling colors everyday. Today those colors were dark blue background, with bright speckles of white in them, as if reflecting the stars. The three of them made a game of recording all of the combinations.
" Well how was your guys first day back from break?"
" We got a new English teacher." I replied.
" Oh, I'm sorry man that must suck."
" She's nice though." Pipped up Anara.
" She gives me the creeps. She did this odd thing with her eyes, one minute they were green the next gold, then back to green."
" Kinda like yours?" Asked Tip.
" No more like it was momentary."
" Odd." Tip paused, " Well whatever, maybe it was just the trick of the light. Me by the way, became lab partners with Kate Mallytown." There was a pause for effect.
Anara and I collapsed on the table, half laughing, half groaning in despair, Tip's arms still up as if expecting congratulations.
" Oh goodness, child, you have no chance, and your gonna make the rest of us look bad." Said Anara.
" Please, Im gonna earn us legendary status, the golden territory, the populars!"
" What!" I said incredulously, " I thought we were the populars, look at all the people dying, dying to be us." I waved around at all the people in the cafeteria, some people looking up at us questioning our sanity. That was okay though we enjoyed being called crazy and all other synonyms relative.
" I'm bringing back the conversation of the team name." I said.
" No! Not this again! I will not!" She paused, " Okay I have a few ideas. What about The Outcasts!"
" Well you definitely say it with finesse." Sarcastically from Tip.
" It makes us sound like, well how do we say, I don't know, like Outcasts." I said with a quirked eyebrow and probably a smirk.
" Okay, Outcasts is out, do you guys have any ideas?"
" Let's do something that describes us, as in adjectives." I contributed.
" We're interesting!" Exclaimed Tip.
" And different." Said Anara. " What about odd. Wouldn't you guys describe yourself that way?"
" What kind of question is that?" Tip said feigning a look of hurt. " I thought you knew me better than that! Of course we'er odd. You can play any instrument you want, and disappear half of the time, and have freaky Nina skills. Sylus has the oddest name I've ever heard of, plus the funky eye thing. And I," he paused, snapping his fingers in the air in a sassy motion, " do the best impressions in the biz."
" We get it, we get it. We're odd." Said Anara.
I thought for a minute. " The Oddities." I said it with a sort of dramatic flourish.
" Dramatic, but acceptable." Said Tip. He got up, and collected his things. " Well I have tutoring so, I will see you, Sylus, in shop. And we're all going to the library after school right?"
We always did after every school day. Even if we didn't have homework we would still go.
" What kind of question is that?" pretending a look of hurt, imitating Tip.
" Hardy har har. Your so funny Little One." He said using the forbidden nickname. I tried to make myself smaller, to escape the fiery wrath that was to ensue.
Anara's eyes grew dark, and she got up and approached Tip, seemingly only coming to half of Tip's height. Tip's eyes became filled with fear. Anara viciously grabbed Tip's arm and twisted it into an awkward angle forcing him to his knees. She held his wrist extended behind his back. The cafeteria became silenced, all the heads turning and watching the altercation, half of them with shock, the others with a smile. Tip, beside the pain, had a smile on his face and was laughing, and wincing every once and a while. Even Anara had the smallest of smiles.
" Who little now?" She asked in a mostly snide voice, but also a touch of joke in as well.
" Master please forgive me!" Said Tip through the laughter.
Even the lunch ladies were laughing by the time Tip got up off the floor, even Anara had a smile on her face.
" Oh looky here you've made me late." Tip said checking his watch. " She wasn't holding me that hard." Tip whispered to Kate Mallytown as he passed by her table." Then left to go to the library.
" Please don't hurt me." I said fearfully to Anara.
