Grayson POV
"What the hell? Is your chest made out of rocks or something?" an unfamiliar voice complains.
I look up to see both me and a random girl sitting across from each other.
She's holding her forehead and wincing with pain, covering her face.
I scowl, "Well that's an interesting way to apologize"
I instinctively hold out a hand for her to grab, she looks up at me and I freeze.
Holy fuck. She's cute.
She ignores my hand and pushes herself up instead.
"You're welcome" I grumble sarcastically and pull my hand away.
She maintains eye contact, "I never said thank you" .
"I was just trying to give you the benefit of the doubt" I remark, wincing at my uncharacteristic response immediately.
She rolls her hazel eyes, "I don't need anything from you except an apology"
"You're actually insane if you think I'm the one giving the apology. You ran into me!"
"What type of bullshit is that?"
My jaw drops at her audacity and as I'm about to respond, I cringe when I hear my name being yelled from the field.
"GRAY! GET YOUR ASS ON THE FIELD NOW".
I turn back to the girl, "Watch where you're going next time and try not to be such an ass all the time".
I run to the field, erasing all thoughts from before and focusing on everything I need to do as the lacrosse captain.
Here we go.
-
Another win.
My teammates are tossing me in the air as our coach pats each one of us on the backs.
"Gray, that last shot was killer!" my best friend, Isaac, exclaims.
I smile and thank him while my team takes turns hopping into one of the freshman's cars, begging him for a ride.
There's a team dinner planned at a local restaurant, Jennie's, that the team has never gone to except me. They're missing out immensely. You have not lived life until you had a bite of food here. Trust me.
-
Everybody is ordering their food when we hear the light ding of the restaurant doorbell.
Who else is here at this hour?
Shaking my head, I focus back on the menu and the waiter.
"She's hot" I hear a whisper from next to me as the rest of the boys are checking someone out.
"Shoot your shot, dude!"
"They're all gorgeous"
"Gray, check her out"
I sigh as the boys know I have never been interested in relationships or girlfriends in general. Lacrosse is my only love in life. And I hope to keep it that way.
I glance at the mysterious girl from my peripheral vision and notice familiar long brown hair. The girl is turned around and I shift to get a better look.
As I start to turn away, she finally faces us and accidentally makes eye contact with me.
It's the girl from earlier.
We both scowl immediately.
I smirk, "Damn, I didn't know I had a stalker".
Scoffing, she barely blinks, "In your dreams asshat"
"Nah, that'd be more of a nightmare"
"Look in the mirror if you want to see a nightmare"
She is yanked away to the side by a girl with curly brown hair.
The girl (very loudly) whispers, "Lynn! We leave you alone for ONE MINUTE and you're fighting with Grayson Allen?!"
The girl, Lynn, laughs before pointing at me, "Tira, that's the Grayson Allen you've been gushing about? How disappointing"
Flustered, my jaw drops and I push my chair out from under me and come face to face with this "Lynn" girl. My teammates are watching our interaction silently.
"What did you just say about me?" I look straight into her hazel eyes that show no fear.
She takes one step closer, almost chest to chest now, "I said that I'm disappointed that you're the Grayson Allen everyone talks about"
"And why is that?"
"I just didn't know everyone worshiped an asshole"
She is yet again snatched away from her friend, who drags the three of them out the door while yelling, "I apologize for her behavior! We are leaving now! Good night!"
I stand there flabbergasted as my teammates laugh and tease me for the rest of the dinner, quoting what she said and pointing fingers.
No way she got the last word in again.
-
As soon as I get home, I sprint up to my mom's room only to see her sleeping peacefully. Breathing a sigh of relief, I gently shut the door and kiss my little sister's forehead goodnight.
Mom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when I was 13. Since then, I've had to watch her grow weaker day by day while taking over as a parental figure for my 10 year old sister, Lacey. Dad works all day and night to provide for us as well as pay for the medical bills.
Anyways, tomorrow is Wednesday. Wednesday is mom's physical therapy. I'll go home early tomorrow.
Plopping on my bed, I immediately pass out from exhaustion.
