The idea came to me very simply one morning as I was lying in bed with my wife. It was the very early hours, still dark outside, and I lie there awake watching her sleep like an angel.
Suddenly, an idea came to me-one of those fleeting, phantom thoughts that always seem to plague the mind during moments of sleeplessness. As I watched her sleep, my mind conjured a scenario:
What if someone broke into our home right now, took my family captive, and tried to make me choose which one to kill? The others would all survive, but the one of my choosing would have to be sacrificed to save the others.
Who would it be: my wife, my daughter, my infant son?
It was in that moment that the answer was very clear to me. My choice would be none of them.
My choice would be me.
Kill me to save them.
As a husband and father, it was a no-brainer. To protect my family, I would sacrifice myself and not think twice about it. And out of those black, early-morning thoughts came the basic premise for what would eventually become a short story called, The Choice.
