Almost 90% of Navayāna Buddhists live in Maharashtra. In the 2011 census, Marathi Buddhists were 6.5 million, constituting 5.8% of the population of Maharashtra and 77% of the entire Buddhist population of India

Dr.B.R. Ambedkar is regarded as a bodhisattva, the Maitreya, among the Navayana followers

நீந்தத் தெரிந்துகொள்

சிலர் படகில் கங்கையைக் கடந்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். ஒரு பண்டிதர் தன்னுடைய கல்வியரியை தம்பட்டம் அடித்துக் கொண்டார்: "வேதம், வேதாந்த ஆறு தரிசனங்கள் என்று சாஸ்திரங்கள் படித்திருக்கிறேன்' என்றார். 'என்ன, உனக்கு வேதாந்தம் தெரியுமா?" என்று ஒருவனிடம் கேட்டார்.அதத்து அவன், 'இல்லை ஐயா' என்றான்.

பண்டிதர் இப்படி அளந்துகொண்டே வந்தார். அந்த மனிதன் மௌனமாக இருந்தான்.

அந்த நேரத்தில் பலத்த புயல் வீசத் தொடங்கியது. படகு நிலைகுலைந்து ஆடியது. அப்போது அந்த மனிதன் பண்டிதரிடம், 'ஐயா பண்டிதரே, உமக்கு நீந்தத் தெரியுமா?' என்று கேட்டான். அதற்குப் பண்டிதர் 'தெரியாது' என்று பதிலளித்தார்.

'எனக்கு வேதம், வேதாந்தம் எதுவும் தெரியாது. ஆனால் நன்றாக நீந்தத் தெரியும்' என்றான் அந்த மனிதன்.

பல சாஸ்திரங்களைத் தெரிந்துகொள்வதால் என்ன பயன்? இந்த வாழ்க்கை நதியைக் கடக்கத் தெரிவதுதான் அவசியம்.

Story 2:

Kambar is a poet in King Kulothunga's court.

when Kamban discovers his son's love for the princess and realizes the gruesome retribution that would undoubtedly follow, he pleads with Ambikapathi to give up his love.

Ambikapathi could sing 100 devotional songs in succession, the King promises him Amaravathi's hand in marriage. If he failed in this challenge, he would be executed forthwith.

The court assembles next day at the vasantha madapam, and in the august presence of the King, ministers and scholars,
Ambikapathy commences his soiree with a short invocation to Saraswathi, the Goddess of learning.

Amaravathi mistakenly counts this as one of the hundred songs, and so at the end of the 99th song, she appears happily in front of Ambikapathi to signal his victory.
Overjoyed at sighting his beloved, and thinking that he has completed the hundred songs, Ambikapathy bursts into a verse in praise of Amaravathi's appearance.
Rising with grim satisfaction, Ottakoothar points out that only 99 devotional songs had been sung, and hence Ambikapathy has lost the challenge.
Kamban's anguish-filled plea for clemency falls on deaf ears, as the King orders the death sentence to be carried out.
Ambikapathi is put to death, and the grief-stricken Amaravathi too dies and their souls unite in heaven.
