After hours of practice, I was finally stepping out of the very rink I'd been trying to escape from. But showing any shred of happiness was futile because this was only the beginning. I'd be coming back here again and again for god knows how long.
My first day with them was already a nightmare. My ears were still ringing from coach's screams. She pushed me to my limits and didn't show any ounce of sympathy. Almost none of them did. The only exceptions were Archer, surprisingly Daniel,
and Allan...
Sort of...
To force some optimism in my boot camp experience, it was now lunchtime, and I could finally have time all to myself.
"Christopher!"
And just like that, my one second of happiness immediately disintegrated.
I turned around with a forced smile the moment I heard that familiar voice.
If I wanted to survive, I better do it right.
"Hey, I was just wondering if you'd be down to have lunch with us," Archer said with a soft smile, but as I glanced to his back, I could see his team glaring daggers at me.
"I don't think your team would like that." He turned his back to where I was looking, but instead of the hostility I was given, they flipped a switch and gave him warm, gentle smiles as if they were two-faced villains in a chick flick.
"Oh, don't worry about them. They just wanna look tough, they're actually really nice if you get to know them."
I gave an odd, utterly unconvinced smile as my eyes glared back at them. "Is that so? Then I guess it wouldn't hurt to join." A satisfied smile crept across my face, seeing the team's looks of despair and annoyance. Though I had spent the past torturous hours with those baboons, this was my opportunity to save my ass from getting tortured in a far worse manner.
They weren't ecstatic to have me there either, so I'd like to think of it as payback.

It hadn't been 10 minutes, and I already wanted to leave. We sat at a large rectangular table, fitting all 11 of us. Even with that many people, none of us spoke. The substitutes were obviously glaring at me, naturally bitter that I took their chances of playing varsity. Still, I, of course, couldn't blame them.
The cafeteria was filled with loud chatter, as if I was at a street market instead. It heavily contrasted with the deafening silence at the table. Once again, Archer saves the day by breaking the silence first.
"Guys, I know we all started off on the wrong foot with Christopher, but he's officially on our team now. So we all have to make the effort to get along."
They remained silent, clearly unhappy with the idea but putting up with it for the sake of their dearest captain. Despite Archer's effort, the atmosphere didn't turn any less awkward. The stares intensified, bothering me with the unwanted attention.
I didn't know if it was a blessing sent from heaven or a curse sent from hell. Satan had unfortunately answered my prayers instead when everyone turned their eyes away from me and to the sickeningly sweet voice calling out to me. "Chris!"
All color drained from my face as I turned to see the face I dreaded seeing. It was Stella Ray, the cruel villainess who tormented the female lead at no end, the unfortunate fiancée of Chris,
And my batshit crazy ex-girlfriend.
The crazy bitch before me had given me a concussion by throwing a plate of spaghetti at me because I apparently stole her chance of becoming valedictorian back in college. Granted, she claimed it was an accident and even stayed with me until I got better,
