Dinner had been a quiet affair, filled with the usual pleasantries and prayers. The nuns had prepared a simple but delicious meal: roasted chicken with rosemary, steamed vegetables, and freshly baked bread, accompanied by a light vegetable soup. For dessert, there was a modest apple pie, its sweet aroma filling the dining hall.
Claire and Sister Lily-Rose, a lively young nun with auburn hair and freckles that danced across her cheeks, began clearing the table once everyone had finished. Claire's own dark hair was pulled back in a neat braid, her eyes reflecting a mix of emotions she struggled to keep in check.
As they worked, Lucian strolled into the kitchen, his presence instantly commanding attention. He wore a crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal strong forearms, and dark trousers that fit him perfectly. His dark hair was tousled just enough to give him a roguish charm.
"Hi, ladies," Lucian greeted with a charming smile, his deep voice sending shivers down Claire's spine.
"Hi, Lucian," both Claire and Lily-Rose responded, though Claire's voice was more subdued.
As Lucian left the room, Lily-Rose sighed dramatically, her green eyes twinkling with mischief. "Isn't he just dreamy?" she said, her tone flirtatious. "If only we weren't nuns..."
Claire felt a fire ignite inside her, a jealousy she struggled to conceal. She forced a calm smile and replied, "He does have a certain charm."
Lily-Rose giggled, clearly enjoying her little game. "A charm? Oh, Claire, he's more than just charming. Those eyes, that smile... I wouldn't mind being alone with him for a night."
Claire's hands tightened around the dish she was drying, but she kept her voice even. "We must remember our vows, Lily-Rose."
Lily-Rose shrugged, her eyes still sparkling. "I know, I know. But a girl can dream, right?"
They finished tidying up and headed upstairs to their rooms. Claire's thoughts were a whirlwind as she changed into her nightgown, the soft fabric brushing against her skin. She brushed her silky hair, staring at her reflection in the small mirror on her dresser. The jealousy she felt was not just a simple emotion; it was a fire that consumed her thoughts.
"He's only interested in me," she whispered to herself, trying to quell the doubts that nagged at her mind. The image of Lucian and Lily-Rose together, even in jest, was too much to bear.
As she continued to brush her hair, the anger and jealousy simmering within her, Claire knew what she had to do. She couldn't let this go. She had to confront Lucian, to make sure his affections were truly hers and not just a game he played with everyone.
Her resolve hardened, Claire set the brush down and took a deep breath. She wouldn't let Lily-Rose or anyone else come between her and Lucian. With determination in her eyes, she left her room, her bare feet silent on the cold floor as she made her way towards Lucian's quarters.
The convent was quiet, the other nuns already settled in for the night. Claire's heart pounded in her chest as she approached Lucian's door. She knocked softly, her breath hitching in her throat as she waited.
The door opened, and Lucian stood before her, a look of surprise on his face. "Claire? What are you doing here?"
"I need to talk to you," Claire said, her voice steady despite the tumult of emotions inside her.
Lucian stepped aside, allowing her to enter. "Come in," he said, his eyes filled with curiosity.
As the door closed behind her, Claire knew there was no turning back. She had to know the truth, to confront the feelings that had taken root in her heart.
