Corbin sat silently in the back of a taxi, rubbing his right arm. The neighbourhood the car pulled into was dimly lit, and a darkened sky loomed over him like smoke. He pushed his curls from his eyes, and turned to face a girl who sat beside him. Her green eyes kept glancing towards him as she tapped her fingers on the car door, the colour of her eyes similar to his.
"We're late Cassy" Corbin said, peering his head around the back of the seat, attempting to get a better view.
"I know, I know, the flight was delayed. There was nothing I could do, I'm sure the nurse will understand," Cassy said, pulling her purse from her bag.
"It's ok, I just don't like to be late" Corbin said.
The taxi pulled up outside of a large gothic pale blue house. The cobblestone path slicked with rain and the house seemed abandoned, no lights lit up any window of any house in the street. No curtains were drawn, no cars in the drive way, the grass that lay around the homes was dead and unkept, and not a single bird sat in the crooked trees that stood scattered down the pathways. Cassy paid the taxi man and both of them stepped out of the car. A wind blew against Corbin's pale face, his sleepy and sultry downturned eyes gazed up at the house, he gulped, grabbed his bag and approached the door knocking twice. Cassy linked her arm through his and waited for the door to open, her eyes flicking back and forth from Corbin to the door as she adjusted the bag that rested on her shoulder. The trees moved aggressively with the wind as the front door cracked open.
"Ah good you're finally here" an elderly woman said opening the door wider and pulling Corbin in. Her lips were tightened and her eyes narrowed as she sighed deeply. "Roman is in his room, I've been waiting for half an hour now."
Corbin couldn't help but notice how sharp the woman's words were, I don't know what this woman wants us to do, it literally was unavoidable. He thought shooting a glance at Cassy. The woman's face and tone were similar in that both were cold, her lips where thin, yet wide and her nose pointed at the end. She had on a loose floor length orange dress that her corse, grey hair barley touched and nothing about her posture was welcoming.
"I'm so sorry our flight was delayed, is everything here?" Cassy asked the woman, putting her bag down beside a black leather sofa.
"Yes, his food is in the cabinet along with extra syringes if you need them, thank you for filling in for Sara, it was so tragic what happened." The woman moved closer to the door and placed her hand onto its handle.
"No it's nothing, we was planning on moving out here to Blackwood anyway, it was the least I could do, she was my sister after all." Cassy said sitting onto the sofa.
"Well I'll let you settle in, if you need me just call" the woman said opening the door and leaving the house.
Corbin sat himself beside Cassy, both hands sat placed towards his stomach in his lap, his fingers cold and a weight on his chest that he didn't understand. He mustered up a smile and his eyes softened as he gazed at her.
"You're so lovely you know that right?" Corbin said.
"No" Cassy waved her hand and shook her head. "no anyone would've done it, the nice one is you for moving out here with me."
"Best friends don't let each other go things alone, plus I was gonna come back here anyway. It was just a bonus that I get to still be your roommate... so what's wrong with this guy anyway?" He said nudging her shoulder with his.
"He's in a coma and needs care, My sister was friends with him before it happened and agreed to help, he's name is Roman."
"Oh I see, you never told me about her passing, are you-"
