A warm breeze washed over the bare skin of your legs, slipping you further into the serene quiet of two o'clock in the morning. If you were in bed next to Sunny you'd be lulled into a slumber by the lullabies of the sirens and chatter courtesy of the city that never sleeps. It was as quiet as New York would get.
Pulling the hood of your navy blue sweatshirt over your hair, you pull your bare feet up off the concrete of the balcony and tuck them under you on the flowery cushion of the wicker chair you were curled up on. Taking a long, deep breath, you lift your phone off your lap, holding it up in front of you.
"Can't answer that one can you?" Yoongi's deep voice sounded through the speaker, his chilling melody laced with exhaustion. Shaking your head, you shrug and sigh at your loss of words.
"No, I don't think I can," You say with a small smile, and he laughs.
"Oh, come on," He grovels, "You're telling me that growing up you didn't have a favorite superhero?"
"It's not that I didn't have a favorite one," You defend, talking with your hands, "It's... I couldn't pick one that I liked." There's a muffled sound from Yoongi's end, like the phone had been dropped.
"Shit, sorry, trying to change," He says. Laughing at him, you shake your head again.
"Put the phone down and change, D," You say, "You ever heard of speaker phone? I'm sitting in a chair right now and I have you on it, I'm not even doing anything." There's another muffled sound, then his line becomes clearer and you can hear almost every move he's making.
"You're smart," Yoongi says, his footsteps echoing around his voice. You hear a clatter and listen as he turns on running water, like he was standing in a bathroom. There's an opening of what sounds like a bottle, then the sound of it being closed with a click. Another smile pricks at your lips.
"What're you doing?" You ask, and hear him huff a laugh amongst all the other sounds you could hear.
"Washing my face," He speaks as if his words are tiny. After another moment the water is turned off and you hear him scoop his phone up.
"You better keep this phone out of your hand until you're done doing what you're doing," You giggle.
"My god," He sighs, laughing along with you, "Fine. You're not off the hook though, every kid has a favorite superhero, even if it's somebody from their real life." His voice almost goes in and out, like he had walked away from wherever the phone was sitting. Thinking to yourself while you listened to him rummage through what you assumed was the luggage he was traveling with, you can't place any hero figure you admire.
"I mean, I feel like most adults in my life failed me, honestly," You say, hearing his footsteps come back toward the phone.
"Yeah?" He questions sincerely.
Gazing out over the balcony onto Sunny's quiet street, you start to think of her. Sunny has always been a constant in your life, and you were pretty damn sure she was here to stay. She's seen you on your good days, she's gotten you through your bad days and so much more.
"Can the superhero be my age?" You ask, glancing to the sliding door of the apartment.
"Of course," Yoongi says into the receiver, he had taken the phone off speaker. You smile, and nod.
"Sunita," You say with your whole heart, "She's... she's gotta be my hero." It's quiet on his side for a bit, but when he finally speaks it's like you can hear the smile he was wearing.
"I love that that means you still see her that way," He says, making your brows furrow above your eyes.
"Without a doubt," You answer quickly, "She's impressive, and she's selfless, and she's always here for me when I need her, I mean, I've been living with her for, like, two months and she hasn't been hounding me with responsibility, or bugging me about moving out... She's... She's an incredible person." Yoongi's line is quiet once again, making you wonder if he was getting too tired to keep talking. Tapping your screen, the little timer above the keypad says the two of you have been talking for just about an hour. Either he was about to fall asleep, or you've said too much.
