One month. One month until Twila's ceremony of adulthood. That was the only thing on Twila's mind recently. At school when she should have been listening to the teacher, at home when she should have been spending time with her mom, even at night, alone on a hill practicing magic. The ceremony of adulthood was coming up fast, and Twila was more than afraid.
She was sitting on a hill, practicing her magic. After her mother had told her she was a twilight child, she decided to practice her magic, in case it was ever needed. Twila sat down, frustrated that she still couldn't bend the retreating light, like the books said she could. She had tried and tried, even coming to the hill at twilight, when her powers were strongest, but to no avail. The only twilight power she had managed to do was sense the shadow of other things. A lot of help that did in the middle of the night.
Just when she was about to to go home and give up she felt the shadow of someone climbing up the hill. She guessed that skill did come in handy. The unknown person sat down beside her, without so much as a "hi", and started watching the sunset. Twila finally stole a look. He was a boy, already sixteen, she could tell by the bracelet around his wrist, which all adults wore. He was a midnight child, Twila observed, because of his dark blue skin. He had messy black hair, and wore simple clothes. He didn't look special, but Twila had a feeling that there was more to this guy than meets the eye.
They both sat watching the sunset, neither of them making a sound. Once the sun was completely gone, and only the stars and the moon gave off light, the boy turned to her. The boy studied her, and Twila only hoped he couldn't see through her paint. Finally after and agonizingly long time, the boy spoke.
"You know, most children of dawn don't like the dark." he said in a mysterious voice.
Twila didn't know what came over her but she said, "I'm not like most dawn children." The moment it escaped her lips she regretted it. It was a stupid thing to say and she was worried that the midnight boy would know her secret.
"Oh and why is that?" asked the boy, his voice indifferent.
"No reason." Twila said hastily, trying to cover up her past statement. The boy suddenly leaned in , and put his mouth next to Twila's ear.
"I know what you are, child of twilight," he whispered in Twila's ear. He leaned back and stared at the shocked expression on Twila's face. How could he know? Did he see her practicing magic? Was her paint coming off? Just as she was about to ask he started laughing.
"Don't look so serious your secret is safe with me." He stretched his hand out for Twila to take, and wearily, she put her hand in his. He pulled himself and her to a standing position before turning back to her.
"By the way" the boy said with a smile. "My name is Marxx."
Thanks for reading guys! Thanks to those of you who gave me feedback. I take it to heart. Also I am trying to make the chapters longer as you can see. Lastly it was brought to my attention that people think Twila being a twilight child would be obvious because of her name. The reason why no one suspected wad because it the society people will name their child after the time of day which a relative is born. An example is a midnight child being named Dawn because their grandmother was a child of dawn. Twila's uncle was a child of twilight, thus the name. Thanks!
