"Sy, I don't know what I would be doing without you" His mama, Adama, laughed lightly as she rode in the passenger's seat of Sylis's car.

Glancing over to his right at her, Sylis chuckled as he shrugged his shoulders. "Me neitha'. I'm the best thing to eva' happen to you. You welcome" He laughed harder as his mama's hand hit lightly against his chest. "What you 'bout to do after this ma? Sleep?"

"Maybe. That's after I have a longggg talk with Juke. Ya know, for a while he was doing good. I wasn't getting no phone calls from the school— I don't know what's going on with him Sy. Maybe if you sit down and talk to him, he'll listen to you"

To be real, it's hard raising two boys without a man in the house. It ain't impossible, but it ain't easy. Single parenting & that independence shit ain't always easy in itself either though, especially if you barely making it with one income. Having to split one check multiple ways, just barely surviving. Barely keeping your head above the water. That's why Sylis did what he did, to lift that burden from his mama. So she didn't have to worry about that, but raising them boys? Alone? After their daddy left to "go get milk" and never came back? Mmmm.

"Ima be real witchu' mama. Juke in his prime teenage years. On top of that, he a boy. I ain't justifying nun' he doing, but it's only so much you can tell him right na'. He at school, them kids be influenced by the people they be with eight hours a day who also growing and learning. Meanwhile he only seeing you 'bout a hour in the morning, and a few hours when he get home. I can sit down and talk to him, but some shit he gon have to learn from a school of hard knocks"

Letting out a soft sigh of relief, Adama gave him a weak smile. "Thank you Sy. Maybe your words would make a difference. Coming from his big brother. God, I wish yalls daddy was in yall life and wasn't a fucking deadbeat. I shoal do hate that nigga for that and always will" She shook her head as her voice became lowered and saddened, but also angry.
