One month later

"Are you okay?" I asked Ethan. We were eating at Bella's diner in Tarrytown. I scoffed down my pancakes, but he was barely touching his eggs.

"Yeah, it's just..." He looked down and poked at his eggs with the fork.
"I have a very stressful case..." He looked at me and I could see the sadness in his eyes.
"A murder. A little girl's murder."

I dropped my silverware. It made a loud clang and all the whole diner turned to look at me. Red fire was making its way up my cheeks, all the way to the tips of my ears.

"It's been ongoing since June, but no one could find the murderer." Ethan didn't seem to be on the same planet as me. He stared out the window at the empty streets of Tarrytown.

"Her name was Laura Phillips."

The name resonated in my head. I wanted to cry, to scream, to burst, to run. However, I was trapped by my secrets.

Soon, my brain was nothing but questions yearning for answers.
