I wrote this short story for the 2024 AAPI Contest using:
Prompt 15: Where you are a nurse in the 1700's when Myanmar (then Burma) and Thailand (then Siam) were at war. After you are selected to heal the wounded on the battlefield, you stumble across an enemy soldier, only to fall in love with him. In a time of war and struggle, how will you maintain your romance?
I am Filipino, but I chose this prompt because it allowed me to reminisce about the eventful times I helped my Burmese friend in an Asian talent show. At that time, the Filipino skit was full and since I still wanted to be part of the talent show, I asked if anyone else needed help. And that's how I became part of the Myanmar skit!
Please note that the names of my characters are all in Burmese or of Thai Descent. I took the time to research them online, and please note they are all fictional characters. Any resemblance to those in reality is purely coincidental.
With that said I'd like to share with readers what some of my main character's name means.
Prisana-a girl who has a beautiful shyness expressed in its meaning of "mystery."
Khin= An epitome of warmth and kindness.
Rachini– has a superior and regal edge found in its definition of "queen."
Malee— jasmine flower
Arkhom- Magic
Chai- victory
Faisol- Judge
Maung=Brother
I prefer meaningful names because they give an emphasis on how the character might react.
