Defence Against The Snakes
Hermione sat stunned, her eyes seemed to fill almost instantly while her brain scanned for any rational explanation to what she just heard. Her chest froze over and she allowed herself a second more before standing trying to stabilize her shaking legs.
She didn't dare look over at Nevile, there was no point, she could already sense his shock. Moving quietly down the steps, Hermione kept her shoulders squared and ignored the stretching silence. The hat had spoken. There was nothing left to do. McGonagall didn't waste another moment before delivering their instructions, her eyes no longer wide with shock.
Hermione forced herself to follow behind Malfoy, keeping a large distance. Her stomach felt tight and her mind roared at the extra time she would have to spend with Malfoy. But what confused her more was that now, she was being thrust into a house that wished her death.
The clicking of her heels provided a decent distraction against the silence, the walls echoing each sound as they walked towards the Slytherin common room. The minute they entered, Hermione had to wrap her arms around herself trying to warm her arms from the sudden gush of cold that seemed to radiate from the walls.
Malfoy hadn't shown any sign of his emotions towards the turn of events at dinner. He barley even glanced at Hermione and the more she stared at him, the more he walked like a ghost of his former self. There was no snarky remarks fired, no smirk or sarcastic coughing. It confused Hermione but she braced herself anyway, waiting for his famous punchline.
But it never came.
Finally they reached the common room, Malfoy spoke the password and the portrait opened allowing them to enter. The first thing Hermione noticed was the faint scent of burnt oak and crispy leaves with a touch of fresh grass. The pleasant smell surprised her as she took in the dark room.
The walls were painted black with strips of green and Slythrin emblems hanging along the walls. A large fire was roaring against one wall, three large black sofas filled with students as others stood waiting for orders from there heads. Malfoy waiting by one side of the fireplace and as Hermione walked to the other side she could hear the shocked voices of some of her students.
"You've all been told the rules. I won't go over them again." Hermione's eyes shot to Malfoy's, his cold emotionless voice shook her for a moment. "Break them and I will make sure you live to regret it."
Most of the students still had their gazes set on Hermione, some with small smiles and others with disgust. The speech she had written in her mind didn't fit this situation but the longer the silence grew the more her hands began to shake. It was her turn but as she stepped up to speak, she was cut short by a tall, lanky boy most likely in his fifth year.
"What is she doing here?" He demanded, sneering at Hermione as he rose from the couch. His hands balled into fists, her eyes lingered on the boy before her lips tightened and she stood her ground.
"I'm your head of year." She replied, fighting the nerves from her voice. She could feel Malfoy's eyes burn into her back, the room tense waiting for a reaction.
"You aren't one of us." The bitterness in his voice dripped like acid from his words, the room seemed to shake slightly as Hermione caught his meaning. How was this still happening? How did people still think or feel this way? Didn't the war change anything? The boys accent grew stronger, a hint of Italian. "You're a disgrace to this house."
