First Day Back
Hermione closed her eyes and took in the scent of the old hall. Pumpkin and brick dust swirled their way through her senses as she smiled to herself, remembering her first year. The tables lay empty, candles still floating yet unlit, the windows frosted and a cold chill running its way down to her. Emblems were still hanging at the top of the walls, curled away waiting for their cue to be exposed, constant reminds of loyalty and friendships.
Those emblems meant more then any other sign in Hogwarts. Hermione knew that and she was proud to wear hers.
"Its amazing isn't it?" Neville's voice rang through the walls, hitting Hermione in a blanket of warmth as her chocolate brown eyes rested against his. He tucked his pale hands deep into his black trouser pockets and leaned forwards on his toes slightly with a smile. "Seven years we sat here staring up at all the Professors and now..." He said walking down towards her. "Now we're the ones they'll be looking up too."
"It really is going to be weird. Professor Granger. Doesn't really have that ring to it." Hermione joked, her soft brown curls bouncing down over her shoulder as Neville stood close to her side, smiling down at the empty rows of tables. "Never thought I'd change careers so quickly. Well, at all actually."
"Its okay to have a change of scenery once in a while."
"Changes seem to be hitting me hard lately. More then a few." Hermione added in a whisper, the smile on her lips slowly fading as her eyes fell to the ground. Her throat seemed to constrict and her breathing pained a little.
Neville sensed the sadness lacing her words and wrapped one arm soothingly around her shoulders. "Things'll get better this year Hermione. We're back at the start, so let's enjoy it while we can."

First years stumbled into the great hall, their eyes wide with excitement and yet a hint of fear. Hermione smiled sensing their thoughts and a few students had already caught her eye reminding her of herself and the others. In fact, she felt as though, just by the look on their faces, she could tell their houses already.
At first, she wondered what her Professors thought when they first saw her step up to the sorting hat.
"Now, now children! Gather together, when I call your name, hurry up and take a seat. Once you have been sorted you will join your houses and be taken on a tour. Then you shall be introduced to the heads of your houses and the head boy and girl." Hermione had already been taught the new regime. It was slightly different then when she was attending Hogwarts but in a weird way, Hermione almost preferred it. Their was also some hint of surprise for the Professors too. No one knew the houses they would be in charge of or who for that matter.
The hall had gone silent yet the warmth was buzzing. It was if the walls were alive suddenly. When everything had finally come alive, it had given Hermione one of the best feelings she had felt in a while.
She had missed Hogwarts. More then anyone could have imagined.
The sorting had begun. Nerves students took their place one after the other before running down to meet their new houses with large goofy grins and welcoming shouts of encouragement.
Only a few minutes gone and all were sorted, dinner had begun until it was time for a speech, one that was kindred with joy and promises by the old headmistress who hadn't seemed to age a bit.
"I would like to quickly introduce the newest Professor to Hogwarts. She has been a fellow student, conquered dangers beyond any belief, looked danger in the eye, passed all her exams of course and was one of the reasons we are all here today. Take from her knowledge and see her as an example." Hermione stiffened feeling her nerves kick in as Neville gave a reassuring squeeze. "Please welcome Hermione Granger!"
A roar of applauses and yells erupted through the place leaving a sheepish grin on Hermione's plump lips as she walked up to the platform and took her space behind the large, golden phoenix stand.
"Hello. Its a pleasure to have the opportunity to teach you all this year. Its rather funny staring down at you all when it was only a few years that I was you!" Hermione giggled nervously, her fingers tucking a strand of hair back behind her ear. "I suppose I'll see you all in muggle studies class."
Another eruption of yells filled the air as Hermione hurried back to her seat and allowed McGonagall to continue, announcing the tour.
Now it was time for the Professors.
"Neville Longbottom." McGonagall ushered once the students had left. Neville stood and made his way to the old wooden stool. Most teachers had left, ones that we're not choose to represent any house however Hermione was and she smiled to herself sensing she would be back to Griffindor once more.
"Griffindor!" The hat roared before Neville stood smiling to himself. Five more Professors had been placed, partnered up and off to introduce themselves. Only one place left for head of Griffindor and two for Slytherin. It didn't surprise Hermione how all the Slytherin's still looked the same. Pained and evil. Or maybe she simply had a thing against them for the rest of her life.
"Draco Malfoy." Hermione suddenly caught her breath, her eyes widening as they landed on a guilty Neville. Not once had he mentioned Malfoy! Hermione had some what forgotten about that good for nothing slime ball but when his bleach blond hair came into sight hovering over those ice grey eyes, she felt a dark, cold chill fill her inside. He looked different, older and more distant. His hair no longer gelled back but free and shaggy and his eyes seemed older, darker with a hollow theme. He had grown a little more and wore a plain black shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and untucked from his lose grey jeans. His eyes met hers for a second but their was no look of disgust, he simply looked bleak, uncaring of her presence. He paused in front of McGonagall and watched as she frowned staring down at him. "Late once again. Your second year teaching and you still fail to show yourself! Well, that will have to change since you have been chosen to represent a house this year."
Malfoy nodded, no words left his lips as he took a seat.
Hermione hadn't heard of him after the war, in fact she heard nothing of the Malfoy's at all! But seeing him now and like that, it set her on edge, she preferred no never see nor hear of him again. Now, she felt as though she had left one bad situation to meet only another.
How this boy ruins everything, she will never know.
"Slytherin!" Hermione rolled her eyes. Of course it would be.
Malfoy stood against the wall, his arms crossed and his eyes now focused on Hermione as her named was called as she took her seat. She felt a moment of panic, the same she had done when she was in her first year but quickly it was blown away with excitement at returning to guard her old house.
Neville smiled down at Hermione before her eyes closed waiting to feel the familiar weight of the hat on her head but all she felt was a brief touch before her house was called out. A answer like that from the sorting hat hadn't happened so quickly since Malfoy was first ever sorted and the answer had everyone in shocked silence.
"Slytherin!"

I hope you guys enjoyed this! And yes, I am pulling away from what was actually meant to happen after the war, mainly because I really wanted to get this idea out there and I thought it would be kinda awesome! Of course there is more to the plot the just 'romance' but you'll have to wait for that xD If you want more then let me know!
