As the sun set, a group of a mix of all races and ages were walking into the forest, there were around 4 people all together. An older man with graying hair had a handgun on his belt, he had a blank expression on his face, a woman who was Hispanic, had black, frizzy hair, she had darker skin and she held onto a katana.
"What do you think we're going to do, Francis?" The woman asked the older man, "No idea right now, Maria, I'm just worried about here and now." Francis said, he ran a hand through his brown hair with gray streaks in it. His eyes closed and then opened again, he gave out a loud sigh. "No idea Maria... we don't have any time to think about the future, we'll figure it out when we cross that bridge." Francis added. Maria's eyebrows creased slightly as she nodded, "Yeah... I just... worry for my family, you know?" Francis nodded, "I know, I know, everyone is. They're freaking out, they want answers... it... just doesn't make sense." He mumbled. As the two were ahead, they held a conversation, the other two, a 17 year old male with a younger man were talking. "...So... how've you been?" The younger man asked, "...As good as you can be in an apocalypse I guess Cassel." Cassel nodded, "...Do you think we're gonna... y'know... survive this, Miguel?" Cassel asked. His dirty brown hair was covering his face, Miguel gave a smile, he ruffled Cassel's hair, "Do I think? No, I know we're gonna survive this, we're all strong enough to survive this far, why die now?" He chuckled softly, Cassel smiled, laughing softly, he pushed the hand away, "Yeah... sure... whatever you say..."
"Hey! Francis!" Miguel called out to the older man in the front, Francis stopped and turned around, "What do you want kiddo?" He asked. "I think there's a store up ahead, we can go ahead and scout that out, aren't we running outta supplies?" He asked, Francis nodded, smiling softly, "...Yeah... We are..." Francis turned around and began walking once again, the four were walking down the worn down, gravel of what was once a road. There was barely any cars around as the road was on the countryside, they all had their weapons on them, incase one of the infected jumped out of the mess of bushes and trees.
Cassel stopped for a moment, he bent down and went to go tie the lace of his ankle high boots which were caked in gore and dirt. Miguel had stopped so Cassel wasn't getting left behind. After Cassel was finished, he went to go stand up but a bullet had gone past his head, this is when the group started to rush. Francis grabbed onto Maria's hand and ran, Miguel was ahead of Cassel but he occasionally looked back. A trio of soldiers had come out of the thick forest surrounding them, they all had guns and they were guarded by thick armor, the bullets were coming fast, a few almost hit the group but most missed.
After a while of running, Francis was getting out of breath, this led to Maria running over to the side of the ground and jumping, bringing Francis with her. Miguel followed after and then a very confused Cassel stopped, this is when he heard another gunshot and fell over the side, landing in a bush of overgrowth that was growing under it. Everyone remained silent, trying to stay against the side, they heard a few people talking, despite it being silent, they could hear some parts of the conversation. "...Damn it, we need more people, the general said we can't come back until we have more..." One said, most of it was muffled until more fluent words could be heard, "...Yeah... whatever... let's just..." The sound of footsteps started to faintly disappear, this didn't put the group at ease, they waited until a few moments had passed until they tried to move. Even then, they tried to keep everything quiet, Miguel got up and slowly walked around, trying to find a path to the town again. Once he found one, he gestured for the rest to follow him.
As the four quietly walked, no one spoke, they all were clearly still shook from the close encounter. Cassel was the first to speak, his voice was soft and raspy, as if it was disappearing slowly, "...Damned bastards... what did we even do?" He asked, presumably speaking to himself. Miguel shrugged and it went silent once again, as the group went around the trees and overgrowth, they saw the sight of a few broken bricks, this caused Miguel to start sprinting towards it. Francis followed after and Cassel and Maria stayed behind, confused but the behavior.
Once the two caught up, they saw Miguel trying to push some of the bloody limbs out the way, Francis was in the store, trying to find non-expired food and medical supplies. Cassel rolled his eyes as he went to go help Miguel and Maria went to go help Francis find helpful supplies.Authors note:
