It's been almost a week since I met Sheru. I have spent years of my life alone and in the middle of Political strife but now my days are longer and I feel exhausted even to pretend to be alright. There is no one in the court or even in my harem that's able to keep me engaged in a lively conversation like Sheru did. Whenever someone speaks to me I could always feel their insincerity and also thinly veiled contempt .
I was annoyed with the ministers and officers at the court and the new new tax that they suggested we implement soon. I quickly rejected the proposal because I know that such a tax could be afforded by the nobles and the rich but the working class people like Sheru will suffer alot. I am known to be an evil monarch but I truly do care about my Citizens.
I was walking in my garden when Massi came in with a shadow guard that carried the daily report on Sheru's activities.
" Your Majesty, The boy was seen cleaning the steps of the Lamkek temple yesterday and praying at the entrance of the temple for almost 5 hours. Then he walked to a shop in the town and worked for about two hours, until the owner returned. Rest of the time he just wandered about, and he ate a steamed bun for both lunch and dinner. He slept in his usual place , under the bridge.... That is all your Majesty".
" So he had two steam buns for lunch and dinner right?", I asked. " No your Majesty. He bought one steam bun for 1 coin and then split it for lunch and dinner"
I looked at Massi and asked , " Aren't steam buns really small in size? "
" Yes your Majesty . It's a little bigger than the palm of our hand ".
Hearing that this boy is splitting a very small bun for lunch and dinner made my heart ache. No wonder he kept eating nonstop at our boat ride. This won't do, I'll have to meet him.
" Arrange for me to go to the streets like last week and make sure my Attire is similar to the one that you got me last week ", I said to Massi and he exited the room to follow my orders.
After I arrived at the streets I was led by my guards who brought me to a market place. I looked at Massi and he directed my view to the furthest corner of the market. There Sheru was seated on the ground and he was selling carpets . He had still covered his face but both his arms and upper body was revealed through the rags he was wearing. He was red all over , burning to a crisp in this hot weather.
I dismissed my other guards and walked towards Sheru with only Massi tagging behind me. He was also disguised as a servant of a nobleman to avoid suspicion. The people passing through the roads didn't give any attention to this little man seated on the ground , selling his cheap looking carpets at a really low price.
My heart ached for him. It was weird feeling this way especially since I've only met him once. My confusion about my attachment to this little dove disappeared the moment he looked up and our eyes locked.
His beautiful honey coloured eyes sparkled when he recognised me. His eyes were the only feature that was exposed through his face covering and those damn eyes expressed feelings ina a way I've never seen before. Just a look at the eyes and I knew this little dove of mine was smiling widely. He stood up from the ground and said ,
" SESE, I get to meet you again ...."
Hearing him call me Sese with so much of emotion made me realise something, I don't want to be away from this Little Dove, the only person who calls me with so much of warmth in their tone, who approaches me with no I'll intent, I want to lock this dove in my Palace and take care of him.
You will eventually be mine , my Little Dove.... Just wait till I give you the whole world and everything else that you deserve .
