Devika took a deep breath to steady her nerves as she entered the grand ballroom, decorated lavishly for the occasion. All around her, nobles and aristocrats mingled and conversed, the air buzzing with anticipation. She was keenly aware of the eyes turning towards her, assessing and judging.
At her side, Rani Meenakshi gave her hand a reassuring pat. "Chin up, my dear. You look radiant."
Devika managed a small smile, smoothing her hands over the fine silk of her sari. She knew appearances mattered greatly at events like these, where reputations were built and marriages arranged over cups of fragrant chai.
As they moved through the room, Meenakshi expertly steered conversations towards the purpose of their visit - formally introducing Devika to Hampi's most eligible noblemen. With practiced charm, Meenakshi sang her daughter's praises, highlighting her wit, artistic talents and mastery of classical dance.
Despite her mother's efforts, Devika felt utterly lost in this glittering sea of strangers. The endless small talk and coy glances from hopeful suitors left her drained. She longed to slip away to the quiet gardens, if only briefly.
During a lull in the conversations, she seized the opportunity. "If you'll excuse me, I'm feeling rather warm. I believe I'll step outside for a breath of fresh air."
Before Meenakshi could object, Devika hurried towards the balcony overlooking the gardens. As she stepped outside, the night breeze cooled her flushed cheeks. Away from prying eyes, she allowed her shoulders to slump in exhaustion.
This was only the first of many such gatherings. She steeled herself for the ordeal ahead - maintaining grace under pressure, all while suppressing her own dreams and desires.
For her family's sake, she would persevere. But she vowed that one day, she would gaze up at these same stars and feel hope instead of resignation.
