The doorbell rings, startling me and I almost drop my textbooks on my feet.
He's early.
"Babe, were you expecting someone?" Deacon calls out from the living room.
"Yeah. A friend from school is coming over today. I'm just tutoring them since they're new. Did I forget to tell you?" I call back.
"Yeah, but it's okay."
"We're actually gonna need the living room baby. Think you can finish watching the game in the room?"
"Yeah, no problem." Deacon agrees.
"Thanks babe," The doorbell rings again. "I'm coming!" I shout before I jog to the door. I let out a huge breath before opening the door.
Filling up the doorway with all six feet and two inches of him, is my new school friend, Zach. I'm still taking classes online at UCLA but one of the last big projects before final exam we were given a partner to work with and after communicating for a little bit, I found out that Zach living just a few minutes away so we decided to meet up instead communicating strictly online.
"Hey!" I smile as he opens his arm for a hug. "You're early." I step back so he can come inside.
"I hope that's okay. I figured the earlier I got here the more we can knock out of the way." Zach explains.
"I like the way you think." I smile as I shut the door.
"Oh hey, what's up bro. I'm Zach." Zach introduces himself when he sees Deacon.
I look back at Deacon to see his jaw locked which only gets that way when he's tense.
"Nice to meet you. I'm David. The fiancé." Deacon introduces himself and I narrow my eyes at him.
What was that about?
I shrug it off.
"Go ahead and get settled in the living room Zach. I'll be there in a sec." I tell him and Zach does what I say and heads in the direction of the living room.
I turn to Deacon. "Babe, are you okay?"
"You didn't mention you were partners with a Calvin Klein model." Deacon says.
I laugh."Babe, are you jealous of my project partner?"
"I'm just saying... no guy shows up early just to study with a beautiful girl."
"You heard him, he wants to knock out as much as he can out of the way. He's only here because he's my partn."
"If you say so." Deacon grunts.
I grin. "Alright, now go in the room. I love you." I peck his lips before turning and heading into the living room where Zach is waiting for me.
Zach and I hit the books immediately. We have our notebooks, pens, highlighters, flash cards scattered all around us after three hours and my brain is honestly fried.
I checked on Deacon about an hour ago only to find him sleeping on the bed.
"I think we need a break." Zach says as he shuts his textbook.
"Yeah, I think so too. The words are starting to blur." I admit.
"Looks like I got really lucky landing you as a partner." Zach said.
"Same. And this was such a good idea to meet up-- it's so much easier than trying to get things done through zoom."
"Can I take you out for some ice cream? As a thank you."
"I'm never gonna turn down ice cream." I say with a giggle. "Let me just put my shoes on."
I stand up and go to the bedroom and slip on my sneakers to go along with the workout outfit I'm already wearing.
I glance at the bed where Deacon is sleeping and I ask myself if I should tell him I'm going but I don't want to wake him up so I quietly let myself out of the room.
"Okay. I'm ready." I smile at Zach.
"Let's go." Zach holds open the door for me and we leave.
Ice cream with Zach is nice. The second we were in his car we were laughing, listening to music, teasing each other. He's so cool and easy to hang out with. I bet him and Taylor would really hit it off.
"This was nice." Zach says as he walk me to my door.
"It was," I agree.
"We should do this again," Zach suggest.
"If we get an A on this project you have a deal." I tell him.
"Deal." Zach chuckles before he brings me into a hug, holding me a little too tight but I shrug it off.
"Bye." I wave at him before I let myself into the apartment.
I head for the living room so I can clean up when I see an angry looking Deacon sitting on the couch.
"What's wrong babe?"
"I'll tell you what's wrong. What's wrong is that I wake up and my Fiancé and the wanna be Calvin Klein model are missing. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure you need textbooks to study. So where were you and why didn't you answer my call?" Deacon demand.
"First of all, take the bass out of your voice when you're talking to me." I address. I'm Harrelson; you don't raise your voice at us unless you want to stir up trouble. "And second, you were sleeping when we left and I didn't want to wake you. I was going to text you but it honestly slipped my mind. We needed a study break so Zach suggested we get ice cream." I explain.
"Of course he did." Deacon scoffs.
"You're jealous?" I ask, fighting back a smile. It all made sense now; the weird introduction, the puff chest and angry expression.
"I don't get jealous." Deacon says but I don't believe him.
My earlier annoyance melts away and my smile gets wider. "Aww baby!" I go over and wrap my arms around his neck. "I love it when you go all caveman on me."
"Mya, I'm serious. There's nothing going on between you guys right?" Deacon wonders, a worry knot in his brows.
"I promise, there's nothing going on between me and Zach. I love you, David Kay." I say, emphasizing you.
Deacon studies my face before letting out a sigh and I notice him visibly relax. "I love you too."
