You should've known that going to Estelle's shop on the day of the gathering was not a good idea. You should've just stayed home, but you had to calm your nerves somehow, and the only way to successfully keep your mind from spiraling was tinkering on some stuff. But still, you should've stayed. Because then you wouldn't be in this situation. After taking a shower you had wanted to get dressed, only to find that you couldn't.
You stared at your sisters, gasping, as they grinned at you. Pearl was wearing the Lashé dress, and Rosalith as well. Except, she wasn't wearing hers.
She was wearing yours.
"What the hell, Rosalith?" you asked her, too stumped to even be angry. "Why are you wearing my dress?"
"Oh, come on, now." She waved you off, as if you weren't even worth her time. "You know I spilt sauce on mine."
"It doesn't fit you anyway," Pearl giggled. "And you have so many nice dresses, you can wear a different one."
"I wanted to wear this one!" Now the anger came. How dare she go into your room and just take your stuff like it belonged to her?
"Oh well. Bad luck, I guess." Rosa turned around, waving you off and walked towards the door.
"See you at the gathering!" Pearl gave you a wave and her usual saccharine smile before she followed her sister.
You couldn't let that happen. With big steps you sprinted down the stairs and stepped in front of them to prevent them from leaving. "I want my dress back, now!"
"What is happening? What is this screaming about?" Your loud voice must've alarmed Hematitia, who was turning around the corner in that exact moment to confront you.
"Rosalith stole my dress!" you told her frankly.
Your stepmother looked at all three of you for a moment before she decided to grace you with an answer. "And?"
"I wanted to wear that one!" You raised your voice again, unbelieving that she would actually not see the blatant injustice at all.
But you should've known better than to underestimate her favoritism. "Well, she's already wearing it. She'll give it back to you after the gathering." Just like her daughter she didn't care one bit about how unfair this was to you. If they profited from it they didn't care about you at all.
Since appealing to your stepmother wasn't working at all, you focused on Rosalith again. "Give it back to me!"
"How dare you speak to my daughter like that!" Hematitia shouted at you and stepped forward to grab your arm and pull you from in between your sisters and the door. Her grip was aggressive and harsh, her long nails piercing your skin. In your rage, you didn't care about it.
"She's the one who started this! It was a gift from my grandmother! Give it back now!" you screamed, trying to free yourself from her grip. Pearl and Rosalith just looked at you with disgust.
"How dare you!!" Another harsh tug at your arm made you turn around to face Hematitia again.
Your head snapped to the side as your stepmother slapped you, hard. There was a short silence after, one that made the sound seem even louder than it actually was.
Then you heard laughter from behind you and after that the sound of the door closing. They had left.
You could only stare at your stepmother in shock. She has never treated you nicely, quite the opposite, but she had never laid a hand on you before. Never.
"You finally need to stop disrespecting my family, young lady." Hematitia spat at you venomously. "Your father isn't here anymore. You're nothing, you hear me? You should be thankful I haven't thrown you out yet."
