"Doug will show you to your rooms and the servants will take your luggage up," says Prince Ben. I smile a charming smile, and make way for Doug. I don't have to move much because he's puny.
But before we can leave, a limo arrives. I notice that the hood ornament is missing. Auradon must be in a worse state than we thought. They might not be our best choice of allies. It's difficult to push politics out of my mind, but I do it as the newest arrivals are introduced to me.
"George, Alex, and Erica, this is Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos," says Ben. I hold out my hand.
"Pleasure to make your acquaintances," I say, making eye contact with each of them and asserting my dominance. The one I presume is Jay takes my hand and slaps it around in a complicated greeting ritual.
"What's up man?" Jay asks me.
I know of three things that are up. The economy in America, my ratings on RateUrPrez.com, and my hair poofs. But I say nothing. Such bad behavior mustn't be rewarded.
I give him a disapproving glare and turn back to Prince Ben. "Well, if that's all, I should like to retreat to my chambers. It was pleasant meeting you all."
I tuck my hands behind my back, stand up tall, and march up to where I presume my chambers are. I will have no "Doug" leading me to my quarters. I will lead myself with dignity and pride, and my friends at my side.
There are two available rooms. I take one with Alex, and Erica gets the other. Alex and I find that our belongings are already strewn across the floor. It is very much beneath me to be picking up my own things from the floor, but it seems like the staff is very much incompetent here, and sometimes if you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself.
"What do you think of Auradon so far?" Alex says dreamily.
I can tell that he very much likes it, and so to not crush his spirits, I say, "I'm liking it well enough indeed."
This isn't technically a lie. I haven't lied since the cherry tree incident. I am in fact liking Auradon well enough that I won't immediately leave or declare them an enemy of the state, but I wouldn't necessarily consider them to be in my top three favorite countries. Those would be America, USA, and the Land of Liberty.
Alex is still kicking his feet on his yellow and blue bedsheets. I anticipated that my accommodations wouldn't be met, and packed star-spangled sheets made by Betsy Ross herself. I cover my bed with them, but don't offer any to Alex. He seems to be enjoying this.
I slap my hand on his shoulder amicably. "Well, my compatriot (emphasis on patriot), I better be getting to bed. I have had quite a long day. If I plan on waking up at my normal time, I'll get-" I checked my watch. It read 1816. "-7 hours and 44 minutes of sleep."
Alex nodded, and I quickly changed into my nightwear and sleep cap. I slid beneath my patriotic sheets.
"Goodnight, old chum," I say to Alex.
"Goodnight, good pal," he replies.
Then I'm asleep faster than Paul Revere warning everyone that the British were coming.
