I don't want to die.

The searing pain was all you could feel as your vision blurred. Every part of your body ached from where you'd been struck by the speeding car. Fresh blood oozed from unseen wounds as you lay helpless on the asphalt.

It wasn't fair - you had only lived eighteen short years, and now fate seemed determined to end your life before you'd barely begun. All those years of studying and dreaming of graduation were for nothing. Tears welled in your eyes at the injustice of it all.

Muffled shouts and screams filtered through as people rushed to your aid. You caught the metallic scent of blood and felt hands gently cradling you. In those fleeting moments, your thoughts turned to him - the one you'd never gotten the chance to say "I love you" to. Darkness crept in at the edges of your vision as unconsciousness pulled you under.

When you opened your eyes again, you found yourself standing on a deserted beach. The scene looked familiar, as if you were back to that beach in your dream; the one that you dream of back when you were sixteen. Gradually, you remembered how you used to fall head over heels over a fictional character, how you had confessed, how he had kissed you - everything played in your mind like a movie, and the blood you had on you slowly disappeared along with the pain as if you never had an accident. You stared at your reflection in the water, touching your unwounded face in disbelief. Golden sand stretched as far as you could see, caressed by gentle waves. But something wasn't right. As your senses adjusted, you realized the beauty was just an illusion.

Trash and debris littered the shoreline. Once-proud trees lay felled and rotting. And the ocean... A shudder ran through you at the grisly sights bobbing atop the foul, polluted waters. Was that... human remains drifting amongst plastic and waste? You choked back the rising bile, questioning your senses.

"This is..." You tried to find the right words to describe your situation. "Is this a nightmare? Am I in hell?"

Turning, you saw the ruins of a towering majestic castle you'd seen only in dreams. Crumbling walls and jagged gaps told of its demise. Its surrounding was no better, as if you were transported into an apocalypse.

Suddenly, a strange scraping noise drew your attention to a jutting outcrop of rocks. Steeling your nerves, you picked your way over the slippery stones.

oh, how you regretted that.

Your breath caught in horror. Crouched amidst the carnage was the beautiful merman who you had once dream, scars now ravaging his perfect skin. And in his hands... You stifled a sob at the severed limb clutched in his bloodied fingers. The merman was too busy having his meal to notice your existence.

You felt like crying - how and why did he become like this? His scales that uses to be on his cheeks were no longer there, leaving old scars, and his fins on each side of his head were no longer there. He wasn't even in his merman form. This person looked exactly like how he was when he disfigured himself for the princess in the manga. Was all your efforts to change his fate for naught?

Rushing to his side, you pulled him close, uncaring of the blood and flesh smearing your clothes. Through your tears, you soothed him, begging to understand how this nightmare had come to pass. You knew that by now you should be disturbed by the fact he was eating a detached arm, but that currently was the least of your worries, probably because you had put it in your mindset that this is not real - or maybe it was just you trying to deceive yourself - nonetheless, all you cared right now was him alone.

As soon as you calmed down, you pulled away from him. The pungent smell of blood entered your nostrils, but you could not care less about that.

"What happened?" You cried out, clenching your hands around his tattered blood-stained shirt.
