"I'm so proud of you, Y/N-Chan! You're ready," exclaimed Mitsuri-nee, with a glimmer of pride in her otherwise watery voice.
"I promise to come back alive. I'll make you proud, Mitsuri-nee."
She nodded and hugged me goodbye as I left for the mountain.
I'd completed 6 months of Kanroji Mitsuri's training, and learned the forms of love breathing quite well in that time. I felt ready.
Ready to take on this new chapter.
Ready to become someone who could save a life.
Save someone from the same fate that'd befallen my brothers.I approached the mountain, where about 20 other children close to my age had gathered. I even saw Kanao Tsuyuri, the student of another hashira like Mitsuri-nee. We hadn't really spoken, but I knew well enough that she'd seen things. Way too soon.
I could never even begin to imagine.
Two identical children began to speak in perfect unison, turning everyone's heads in their direction. I knew the gist of the selection, so I only half listened as I examined my surroundings.
Everyone looked basic as fuck.
Except like- Kanao and 3 other boys. Likely the main characters.
Before I knew it, the selection began. The majority of the group tried to hide. Which was just futile. What was the point in trying to hide from demons who can sense your every move.
I fought night after night, using a flexible blade, courtesy of Mitsuri-nee. I was lucky that I'd even been allowed it.
Though, it was admittedly a bother when I caught people staring at my blade more than once. As if the topic of a flexible blade was more important than trying to survive. On the last night, I'd somehow managed to survive mostly unscathed. Though I had a deep cut starting in my thigh and ending just below my knee. Surprisingly, all the hits from my father had come in handy. I could withstand the pain pretty well.
Just after I'd killed yet another demon, I came across a red-headed boy. He seemed to have been... holding on to a dying demon..? Consoling it, even.
I'd wondered what possessed him to care, but I wasn't one to dwell on something for too long. I went about my business killing the demons, flipping and slashing the demons with my royal pink nichirin.
And just like that, the selection had ended.
I survived.
I did it, Mitsuri-nee.
I did it, mother. I hope you're proud of me.
When I approached the wisteria flowers once again, I was admittedly surprised to see that only 4 of the other children had survived. Everyone else must've been killed.
Poor them. They'd only wanted to contribute to destroying all evil demons. But died before they could get the chance.
I'd imagined the kind of things that could've lead people to come here. All the effort they put in. I was going to prove myself worthy, no matter what.
The twins had a few iron ores laid out in front of them on a table of some sort. They'd given us simple instructions: pick an ore, and your sword will be delivered shortly.
I knew that Mitsuri-nee had arranged for my official sword to be as flexible as required, but I was still torn between which ore to select.
They'd all looked the exact same.
The red-headed boy seemed to have no problem, however. In the end, I'd picked a random ore and handed it to one of the twins.
Then, I began my journey back to the Love Estate.
I kept my promise, and I came back alive. Mitsuri-nee was ecstatic.
"KYAAAAA! I'm so glad you're okay! You know, I was so worried! Wait... you're hurt!"
She gestured towards the wound in my leg. "Come with me, I'll stitch it up for you!"
And she did just that. Yet another instance when the beatings from my father had came in handy. I could even withstand the sharp needle pricking through my skin, as it was much like the glass shards from his bottle.
Maybe it'd been meant to happen. For him to have beaten me up like this.
I should really stop thinking about it...
"There we go! All better," she exclaimed happily as she set down the bandage bundle she'd used to secure my wound. "I guess all we need now is to wait for your uniform and sword! But before that, take this."
She took out a small wooden box. And inside of it, lay a beautiful clip to secure the back of my hair. It resembled 6 angel wings, with 3 on each side, with attached chains with pearls at their ends cascading down the length of my hair.
It was breathtaking.
"It's a gift I prepared shortly after I took you in, as a reminder that you can do this! I want you to be motivated whenever you wear it." she smiled and proceeded to embrace me tightly
I was both nervous, and excited at the same time. I'd passed the first major step to becoming a fully fledged demon slayer.
I can do this, I can do this, I can do this.
I think-
