"Hey, you know what I'd like to know?" Finn spoke as the group strolled down the forest trail. "Why send us down today after 97 years? What changed?"
"Who cares?" Octavia grinned, "I woke up rotting in a cell, and now—" She reached out for the bark of a tree and spun around it once. "—I'm spinning in a forest."
River could not resist the urge to smile at the broad smile on Octavia's tanned face. No one deserved to feel freedom more than she did.
"Maybe they found something on a satellite" Monty opposed, "You know, like an old weather satellite or—"
"It wasn't a satellite," Clarke interrupted Monty while she kept up her walk, "The Ark is dying. At the current publication level, there's roughly 3 months left of life support, maybe 4 now that we're gone."
It was safe to say that every single one of the teenagers surrounding her were shocked to their core. River didn't know what she'd expected the reason for the Earth mission to be, but it definitely wasn't that.
"So that was the secret they locked you up to keep, why they kept you in solitary, floated yourold man?" Finn spat out like it was nothing.
In an effort to brush off Finn's comment, Clarke continued on with her explanation. "My father was the engineer who discovered the flaw. He thought people had a right to know. The council disagreed. My mother disagreed. They were afraid it would cause a panic. We were gonna go public anyway, when Wells. . ."
"What, turned in your dad?" Finn asked the blonde who'd gotten lost in her own mind, staring at the dirt beneath her feet.
Clarke shook her head, slightly. "Anyway, the guard showed up before we could. That's why today. That's why it was worth the risk. Even if we all die, at least they bought themselves some more time." She finished off.
Monty spoke at River's side. "They're gonna kill more people, aren't they?"
A twinge struck Rivers stomach by the sadness of his voice. She herself didn't have anyone else left on The Ark that she cared about — but others did. Maybe their mothers, fathers, friends. In contrast, River only had Octavia and Bellamy.
"Good. After what they did you me, I say, float them all," Octavia snarled before jogging further away from the group.
"You don't mean that!" Jasper called after her.
River decided to split up from the rest, instinctively wanting to make sure that Octavia wouldn't get hurt. Bellamy would quite literally kill her if she got a single scratch on her watch.
"Rivi!" Octavia beamed from the edge of a shiny blue lake.
With a giggle, River wandered up to her friend. The water glittered in the sun's gentle light, like something she'd never laid eyes upon before. It was mesmerising. Before she knew it, Octavia had begun taking one clothing off after the other, until eventually, she was only left in her underwear and a tank top.
