GEMMA HAD NEVER PARTICIPATED in a trial before, and frankly, she wasn't sure what she was supposed to do. She was seated a few rows behind Charlotte and Peter Montague, the latter donning an orange jumpsuit which was more than satisfying to see. Still, Gemma was nervous about whether or not it would be permanent – the evidence was stacked against him, but she also knew that Charlotte was very good at her job. She had been up all night thinking about this day and this exact situation, and when she had dozed off out of sheer exhaustion, she had been plagued with nightmares of Montague and his dead wife. She was determined to see Montague put away for good, hopeful that she had done her job well enough to ensure it.

"Gemma Moretti? You're the bounty hunter, right?" She was startled out of her thoughts by the fervent voice of a man next to her, and glancing over her shoulder, she found a balding, middle-aged man staring at her expectantly.

Unsure what she was getting herself into, Gemma nodded. "That's me", she confirmed, and with a massive sigh of relief, the man stuck out his hand for her to shake.

"I'm the guy trying to put Montague behind bars. I know this is short notice, but I proposed putting you on the stand and the judge agreed. We're calling you as a witness", he announced matter-of-factly, and with her eyes widening, Gemma turned properly on her seat to give the man an incredulous look.

"I've never done that before", she blurted out, the first thing in her mind aired out, and with a chuckle, the man wiped his forehead and gave her a reassuring nod.

"It'll be fine. Just answer my questions truthfully and it'll be smooth sailing. Alright? See you in a few", he smacked Gemma's shoulder encouragingly, and before she could protest the idea, he had sauntered off to his side of the courtroom.

Swallowing thickly, Gemma adjusted her jacket and glanced over at Charlotte, catching her gaze for only a second – then, she ducked her head away. What would she say about Gemma going on the stand, anyway? She worked for the LAPD, sure, but she got her cases from Richards & Wheeler. Surely, biting the hand that feeds you was not a very bright idea. Still, her sense of justice was beating heavy in her heart, telling her that she needed to do whatever she could to get Montague that guilty verdict. So, taking the stand, it was.

The judge called the court in session, and soon enough, Gemma's name was being called. In an instant, Charlotte turned on her heel to stare at the woman in disbelief, and with her cheeks burning, Gemma avoided Charlotte's piercing eyes as she made her way to the witness stand, her worn sneakers squeaking against the floor. She had never been a particularly shy woman, but something about sitting in front of everyone, her answers for all to nitpick, made her palms sweat.
