MORNINGS WITH HER NIECE always ran smoothly for Gemma, and all her disappointment about Fiona staying over was directed completely at the prospect of her own mother missing out on daily life. Doing the actual babysitting was very easy – the seven-year-old was the easiest kid Gemma had ever faced, easy to please and handle. When Gemma forgot about her niece's preference of apple juice over orange juice, she didn't throw a tantrum but drank her juice politely, and when Gemma had to decline a round of Monopoly before work, she accepted defeat graciously. Frankly, Gemma wasn't sure where she had gotten her good manners from – Beck herself was a loud-mouthed, snarky woman and with no father in the picture, she couldn't imagine another influence. Other than herself, of course, but she didn't think that highly of her own character.
Beck showed up to pick her daughter up eventually, not on time enough to save Gemma from running late, but she didn't feel like picking another argument. They exchanged no pleasantries, Gemma only steered the little girl into her mother's arms, and after waving goodbye, they parted ways. The Moretti was happy to be done with her sister with minimal effort – she still had a long day of work ahead of her, and she didn't feel like souring her mood so early in the morning.
With a pair of sunglasses covered in small scratches over her eyes, Gemma made her way to Richards & Wheeler. Her Toyota made some alarming noises as she drove, but her way of dealing it was to simply crank up the volume on the radio and sing along the classic rock tunes to drown out the sound of something potentially breaking. It got her to work, anyway, and after locking the doors, she headed inside and straight for Santiago's office. She had gotten cases from multiple lawyers in the past, but she had learned to start her day with her favorite one, as more often than not, Santiago had some intel for her that would get her going.
Today was no different. "I'm going to need you to handle this one delicately", the man started from behind his desk, mysteriously holding the file against his chest. The enigmatic tension got Gemma curious, and with a gleam in her eyes, she leaned over the desk.
"Why? Is it a celebrity? Oh my god, am I going after Keanu Reeves?" Gemma gasped, a hand flying to her chest dramatically, and the gesture earned a roll of eyes from Santiago.
"No, it's not Keanu. Does he even live here?" Santiago pointed out before opening the file and sliding it across the desk. "I need your care on this because we're dealing with a teenager. Her name is Melody Mathis. She was supposed to be in court two days ago after shoplifting", he went on, and with an intrigued hum, Gemma looked over the black and white mugshot of the grinning girl. Surely, she was going to be a handful, but she had been something of a troublemaker growing up herself – everyone had always expected Beck to be the one to rebel, but it was Gemma who had smoked in secret and snuck out of the house to go to parties. It had been a phase that she moved on from eventually, but she figured it would benefit her with the case to know a little something about troublesome teenage girls.
