Olivia
"Horrsesss!" I watched as my mother yelled. This was her way of gathering the horses up without having to physically go get them. She's been doing it this was for over a year now and so far, it worked with no problem. I was definitely proud of my mother. She was running the farm very well. She had to learn everything once my father passed. And I became very protective over her. No man was able to get close to her since my father's death. One reason was for years she just wasn't ready, and the other reason was because I wasn't ready, and no man could or would take my father's place. But with it being over four years since his death I've learned to calm down. If she was ready to date, I would be okay with it, not that I had a say in it, but I felt it wouldn't bother me as much if she were to date. I was also surprised why she never asked me why I never dated. At the age of twenty-three I barely ever dated. Just a few guys but it never lasted. The last date I went on was three years ago and I was okay with that. I was too focused on helping mom with the farm and at the moment that was my only focus. I wanted to take over this farm years down the line anyway. "Look at that beautiful Stallion." Snapping out of my deep thought I looked to find the wild horse running around with our flock."I don't know why he won't let us catch him, being that he loves being around our horses already." I said as I watched him run.
"I wish it did work like that honey. He won't even let us near him."
"I'm going to catch him one of these days."
"Hopefully you do. He would make a great stud for our females. Boy is he a beaut." We allowed our horses back into the gated area and of course he stayed behind. I was going to catch him, and he was going to be mine. I rode in silence back to the house where we put the horses back into the stalls. It was a long day like all days. The workers went home, and I went to take a much-needed shower. I felt content but I also felt as if I was still missing something. Being an only child didn't help matters. I never liked the fact that I was an only child and no matter how much I bugged my mother and father for a sibling I never got it. I guess that was an okay thing on the count of I was bullied during middle school for being biracial. Mom said they didn't know any better, but I say they did know. And dad knew that they knew better. Mom was always trying to keep the peace while dad was a great debater. He could either debate with his mouth or his fist either way was fine with him. I smiled at the remembrance of him. God only knew how much I missed him. Keeping myself busy helped to keep the sorrow away. Going to lay down I took a slow deep breath said a pray and dosed off to sleep. Sleep always came easy after a prayer.
The next morning, I went downstairs into the kitchen where mom was making breakfast. Her famous pancakes and Baken. I never grew tired of them.
"Good morning." Going over to her I kissed her on the cheek before going to get the orange juice out of the refrigerator.
"When are you going move out on your own?" Mom asked and I froze looking at her.
"You don't want me here?"
"Of course I do it's just, you're twenty-three soon to be twenty-four. When are you going to want your own space?"
"Never. Imma grow old and grey right here." She chuckled. "That okay with you?"
"That's more than okay with me. I know you'll want to move out one of these days though."
"Maybe, but it's no time soon though."
"You have your own money and everything and yet you want to stay here under me."
"Who else is going to help you with the farm?"
"We do have a whole staff you know."
"No that's not good enough. Only me and you can run it the way it's really supposed to be ran." She shook her head at that as I downed the rest of my orange juice. "You're stuck with me woman." I said as I left to get dress for the day.
