My muscles strained as I pushed the heavy bed against the door.
My left arm gave out long ago, so instead I resorted to pushing every piece of furniture I could find with my right shoulder. The post of the bed dug into my skin as the screech of metal against tile came to a halt.
I took a step back admiring my hard work.
After I learned from the wolf woman that I was back in the Western Park District, I continued to hold her hostage. I had wanted to see if I could break open the window, but quickly realized I was too high off the ground to escape from that route. So, with the scalpel still pressed against her neck, I led her out the room I was in and threatened to kill her in front of all the wolves and doctors if they came near me. A stupid decision really, because, I could not manage to find my way out of this huge and winding hospital if my life depended on it. And it did.
Then, I pushed my hostage to the side and ran into an empty room, barricading myself inside. Using all the furniture I could find and stacking it against my only exit.
Doctors and nurses now litter the halls outside, some of them trying so much as to reason with me. I heard one wolf say in passing that they were going to contact the Alpha.
I was a sitting duck, hiding behind an array of metal furnishings.
As time went by, the sun fell and exhaustion threatened to pull me under. My eyelids started to droop and the adrenaline left as quickly as it came, leaving me with the pain and soreness that seemed to litter my whole body.
I fought to stay awake and the cold floor made me wish that I had grabbed the blanket from the bed before I pushed it against the door. Maybe it was a good thing I was so cold. It gave me something to focus on.
Soon, the whispers of the wolves outside halted and, I'm not sure how, but I knew the Alpha was near. The air had somehow changed.
I gripped the scalpel I still held in my hand.
I got up off the floor and peeked through the blinds of the room that I had closed earlier. There, I saw a group of wolves dressed in all blue, clambering and reporting to someone just out of view. I tilted to the side, prying open the blinds further to catch a glimpse of the towering Alpha who had a deep-set furrow in his brow. I quickly closed the blinds and dropped to the ground, swearing the Alpha's eyes met mine for a moment.
I grimaced at the thought, feeling my heartbeat quicken in my crouched position.
I started to reevaluate if I could make the fall from the window this high up, though I already knew the answer was no, before I heard an assertive knock on the door.
I didn't need to look to know who it was.
I crawled back behind my make-shift barrier and pressed my back against it, preparing myself for the worst.
I heard the Alpha's deep and slightly muffled voice behind the door as my breathing sped up.
"Odette, don't make this any more difficult."
Odette? How does he know my name?
That fact angered me.
I didn't answer him.
I heard a faint and annoyed release of breath before he continued, "I'm getting this door open no matter what, you can fight back and hurt yourself more, or save your strength for later."
My face contoured to surprise for a moment at his acknowledgement of the naked truth that I was not going to stop resisting him. He was giving me the illusion of choice. Making it seem like I had some control over the situation.
