"Are you sure this is going to work?" I questioned as Toby looked at me from the other side of the trapeze set.
"Do you think we would be practicing it if it wasn't?" He replied while tightening some ropes.
Rainye tapped my shoulder, "Hey, I'm gonna head out. Try not to hurt yourselves. We still have to perform tomorrow night."
I nodded and she took that as a sign to leave. Now it was just me and the Fitzgerald Twin. Speaking of Toby, I watched as he dusted some chalk on his hands before grabbing the bar. His fluffy brown hair moving in the soft breeze. Still I couldn't help but notice how toned his arms were when he jumped off the platform. Of course, my arms were the same as his, strong from the years we've been doing this. Well individually anyway, I didn't start working with him until last year.
The brunette pulled his legs up and over the bar and hung down while still in motion. He was waiting on me.
"Come on, (Y/n). I really don't want to puke from the blood rushing to my head," he called out to me.
I nodded and brought my hands onto the bar in front of me and prepared to jump. But...my legs wouldn't move.
Toby frowned at my lack of movement and pulled himself to sit up, "Are you alright? We can take a break."
"No, no, no. I just," I took a deep breath, "Just don't drop me."
He fell backwards once again into position, "Trust me, I won't."
My feet were off the ground. I kicked to propel myself forward and backwards, timing myself to keep up with Toby.
"Now!"
I let go of the bar. After doing several flips I reached out for Toby's hands as he reached out for mine.
...It all happened in slow motion. My fingers grazed his. Toby's eyes widened as I slowly watched him yell something inaudible to me. I was falling.
Strong arms wrapped around my figure and brought me close to their chest with their head ducking over mine. We hit the padding with a thud. Normally we would have the net but this close to the show we needed to learn without it.
"Are you alright?!" Toby inquired, sitting me up in front of him. He gently held my face as he scanned my body for injuries, his stormy gray eyes filled with worry. I slowly nodded and that caused him to sigh in relief. "I'm sorry, I-I thought we had the timing down. I shouldn't have told you to go. I-"
He cut off when I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling his head down to my shoulder in an embrace.
"You...you don't have to be sorry. It was a mistake, everyone makes mistakes," I whispered in his ear, "It's not your fault."
He swallowed a lump in his throat and pulled back to look me in the eye, "Are you sure?"
"Positive."
Toby watched me carefully to make sure I wasn't lying.
I took this moment to realize the position we were in. I was basically sitting in his lap with one of his arms around my waist while the other held my back. Of course if we were close then, with my hands around his neck it was awkwardly close. I turned away embarrassed at the situation, when I turned back I gasped at how close Toby had gotten. Our faces were inches apart and he tilted his head slightly as if to ask me something. I nodded. With that signal he closed the gap and kissed me gently, almost too soft to notice. My eyes fluttered closed to enjoy the moment. When he pulled away it was his turn to be embarrassed. Toby's face was a bright red and he awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck.
"So...practice?" His voice cracked slightly which caused me to laugh.
"Sure, Toby, whatever you say."
