Chapter Two
While Robert and Maya were stuck in their thoughts about Andy, Andy was in the kitchen, beginning to make the Chicken Tikka Masala.
Andy froze.
"Oh, my God." Andy drops the spoon that is in her hand on the counter. "No, no. no. no." Andy said over and over. She shut the stove off and rushed down the stairs and to the supply closet connected to the barn. When she saw Maya standing inside, she froze.
The two were looking at each other for what felt like forever when Andy sighed and looked down.
Maya was the first to speak. "It just clicked for you, didn't it," Maya asked and when she saw Andy's eyes tear up and nod, she grabbed one of Andy's hands. "Hey, I'm sure it'll be fine, Andy." Andy lets a tear fall, another one follows, and Maya does the only thing she can think to do. She pulled Andy into a hug. "it's going to be okay, Andy." Maya continued to run her hand up and down Andy's back when the door opened. Maya looked up and saw that it was Carina. Maya pulled back from Andy and Andy wiped the tears away.
"What is going on in here?" Carina asked, worried about Andy since she had never seen her so torn up, even after her father's death and watching Andy give the eulogy.
Maya opened and closed her mouth. Not sure what to say since this was Andy's secret to share.
"I think I might be pregnant." Andy blurted out, rushed.
Everyone paused for a moment.
"Andy, do you want to go to the hospital for a test?" Carina asked, walking closer to Andy and putting a hand on her arm. She watched the emotions play out on her face.
Andy nodded. "I can't just leave during shift though."
"Andy, it's okay. Go." Maya told her and gently smiled at her. "it's better to figure out sooner rather than later." Andy nodded and Andy followed Carina out of the firehouse and to her car.
While on the way to Grey-Sloan Andy thought back to how weeks before she had grabbed two of the pastries Emmett gave Travis and Vic when he told them Dixon was coming.
Andy remembered looking around, taking a bite, and nearly ran into Ben when she turned around and when he saw that Andy had two.
Ben raised his eyebrow.
Andy tried to cover. "What? I was gonna— I was gonna bring one to you."
"No, you weren't."
"No, I wasn't." And Andy rushed away.
Andy also remembered the time she left the station with Robert one day shortly after the George Floyd news happened.
"Is today a glued to the news day off, or a pretend everything is fine day off?" Andy asked Robert.
"I haven't decided yet."
"Okay, well how about we start with a bubble bath, then food, then more food?"
"What about, um, sex," Robert asked quietly, and Andy spoke back just as quietly. "Mm. That's what I meant by "bubble bath."
"Oh." Robert had said. Andy had never brought up sex before at the station, she preferred to keep it, at least mostly, professional at work and it was just talks they had in the car.
There was one more memory that passed through her head. When she went to Maya's office holding celery and dipping it in, well she didn't even remember.
"What kind of cookies?" was all Andy said after Maya's rant about Carina having to go away for a month.
Andy was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn't even realize they had stopped. Andy looked at Carina and she gave Andy a gentle smile. Andy slowly undid her seatbelt but stayed seated where she was.
"Andy, I can't imagine how you're feeling right now, but we should do this now, okay?" Andy didn't say anything, she just got out of the car, looked at Carina when she got out of the car too and nodded.
"I know. I know I should. I just... I just." And sighed. "I don't even know how to explain how I'm feeling right now."
Carina puts her hand on Andy's arm again. "Let's go and see if you're pregnant before you get too wrapped up in your head." Andy nodded and they walked into the hospital. They walk to an exam room and as they are they, Andy sees Meredith.
"Dr. DeLuca, Herrera." Meredith greets and when she sees the concern on Andy's face she gets concerned and frowns. "Herrera, you okay?"
Andy nodded. "I'm just here for a pregnancy test." She said, not skipping a beat and watched the shock on Meredith's face. "Yup. I'm surprised too."
"Do you want someone with you while you're waiting for the results? I have a few hours before my next surgery and my residents are taking care of the couple patients I have." Meredith told her and reached for Andy's hand. She could see the worry and fear on her face.
"Please." Andy gave her a small smile. "I'd appreciate that, Mer."
"Alright. Let me grab the right equipment and I'll be back. Go ahead and go in, Andy."
Andy sighed and walked in, sat on the bed, putting her head in her hands. Meredith walked over to her and ran a hand up and down her back. "Breathe. Just breathe, Andy, I'll be okay."
