He pulls her roughly toward the exit, not caring who sees or hears them. Once they're in the car, he slams his hand against the steering wheel, unable to control his anger any longer.
Kook: What did she tell you about me?
Kook demands, his voice low and menacing. He glances over at her, his eyes blazing with anger.
Kook: What did she say?
Amelia swallows hard, her throat feeling tight. "She said...she said you that you're dangerous." Her voice is barely above a whisper as she looks at him, searching his face for some sign of the man she knows is in there, beneath the anger. Kook's eyes narrow even further, his expression darkening even more. "Did she tell you I'd hurt you?" he asks, his voice practically a growl. "That I'm a monster?". "No, not exactly," Amelia says quickly, wanting to reassure him. "But she said you've done things, that you..." She trails off, unsure how to finish the sentence.
Kook growls low in his throat, his hands clenching into fists on the steering wheel. He takes a deep breath, trying to calm himself down before he says anything else he'll regret. He glances over at Amelia, her face etched with worry, and knows that he can't lose her now. "Olivia doesn't understand," he says, his voice still tight with anger. "She's never been in love the way we are. She doesn't know what it's like to have someone who would do anything for you." He turns to look at her, his eyes searching hers for some sign of belief. "Do you believe me, Amelia?" Amelia looks back at Kook, her heart racing. She wants to believe him, but at the same time, she can't help but feel the weight of Olivia's words. She takes a deep breath and tries to find the courage to speak the truth as she sees it.
Amelia: I'm so confused. There's so much I don't understand.
She takes a shaky breath and meets his gaze.
Amelia: I need you to tell me the truth, Kook. All of it. Even if it's hard.
Kook's jaw clenches, and he looks away for a moment, staring out the windshield. When he turns back to her, his expression is pained. "I can't give you all the answers, Amelia. There are things I can't tell you." Amelia nods, tears welling up in her eyes. "I just want to know the truth. So I can understand why you've done what you've done." She wipes away a tear, hoping he'll understand. As Amelia speaks, Kook's expression grows more distant. He looks at her with a mix of sadness and frustration, and then turns his attention to driving us home. His hands grip the steering wheel tightly as if trying to keep control of something that's slipping away. They ride in silence for several minutes, the weight of Kook's anger and Amelia's confusion pressing down on them like a leaden blanket. Finally, Kook glances over at her, his eyes pleading for understanding.
Kook: You have no idea what I've been through, what I've seen, what I've had to do to survive.
His words are laced with desperation, as if he's begging her to understand. Amelia looks back at him, her own tears beginning to fall again. She knows that she doesn't understand, and she's scared. But she also can't turn her back on him now. She takes a deep breath and reaches out to touch his hand where it grips the steering wheel.
Amelia: I want to understand. I want to be there for you, Kook. But I need you to tell me the truth. All of it. Please.
Kook's grip on the steering wheel tightens, his knuckles white with the effort to keep control. He looks at her, his eyes flashing with anger and hurt, and then looks away again, out the window. As they approach his neighborhood, Kook pulls the car over to the side of the road and turns to face her, his expression raw with emotion. "Fine! You want the truth? You want to know what it's like?" He takes a shaky breath, gathering his courage. "It's hell, Amelia. It's a living hell, and I did things I never thought I would do to survive."
