TW: Underage drinking MENTIONED
Minor panic attack mentioned“Oh I just remembered my brothers on the way.. to help me.. unpack..” She mumbled softly
while stumbling backwards, not wanting to continue. Poor thing was uncomfortable. “Wait!”
Shiloh tries to catch up, he notices her stumbling backwards and does his best to help the girl
get straight, not wanting you to fall on the ground. He can’t figure her quite out, but there’s
something there - a side to her that’s so closed up, so sensitive. He wants to peel the layers of
her onion for some reason. He looks down into her soft eyes, his bright gaze filled with curiosity
and concern. Just as her brother's car pulled in.. he rolled down the window and yelled “Lake!”
which cause poor lake to slip backwards. Shiloh’s gaze is locked onto you as soon as her
brother yells her name. He moves quickly, catches Lakelyn, his eyes filled with concern and
worry. “Are you alright?” He asks as his gaze moves to her face. Catching himself blushing he
quickly stood her up and coughed. Now this was akward. Lakelyn’s face was flush. Recalling the
very quick feeling of his calloused fingers pressing into her back and holding her close “I-I’m
alright..” She barely whispered as her brother rushed out of his car to figure out what happened.
“Lake? Are you.. uh..” Said her brother James as he walked up. His flip flops clapping against
the suburban sidewalk. He noticed the akward glances and flushed cheeks and smirked, “You
alright?” He asked again while looking his sister up and down. “I-I’m fine..” she murmured,
casting her embarrassed gaze down. Little Elodie giggled and whispered. “Daddy has a crush..”
Shiloh’s eyebrows are raised and his face turns a bright red, as he awkwardly laughs, his lips
curling into a smile. He’s unsure whether the blush is coming from the embarrassment of the
comment or the fact he might actually like Lakelyn. No it couldn’t be. He thought to himself
before gently nudging Elodie. “No i-“ He mutters as he tries to process what Elodie had said. He
gets cut off by a “Oh SHIT! shi” Said James while opening his arms for a? Hug?? Lakelyn
looked them up and down as the were hugging and patting eachother of the back. “Do you..
know eachother?” She asked softly while looking at the two awkwardly.. this is strange. “Of
course we do Lakey! Don’t you recognize the ‘ol gummy bear?” Said her brother while
practically hanging around Shilohs broad shoulders. Gummy bear? She thought while glancing
up, then shooting her brother a ‘Wtf’ look. Her eyes going wide as the memories flooded back.
James picked up on her ‘Wtf’ look and laughed. “You seemed confused Lakey..” he chuckled,
causing her cheeks to heat up. “No.. I’m not it’s just.. wow I didn’t even recognize you..” she
murmured “Neither did I.” Said shilohs soft voice. “Well cool you guys are neighbors now and we
can hang out and shit” James smirked as he spoke and Shiloh elbowed him. “Watch your mouth
around my daughter.” James nodded and backed up. “I remember that last time we all three
hung out,” said Shiloh. “It was some party. We got.. uh” he glanced down at Elodie and paused.
“Hun can you go inside and play?” He said while bending down and speaking to the young girl.
She let out a little huff but did as told and toddled inside. “We got wasted, man I even remember
that dare.” He chuckled, lake’s eyes widened and James eyed the two of them. “What dare?”
James questioned and Lake quickly shut it down. “it was stupid.. Uh nothing big you know?”
She murmered and Shiloh raised an eyebrow. As if to say something but he didn’t. Letting out a breath he said “Yeah, I should probably go inside as well. Yeah, it was nice to catch up, for
sure.” He laughed, trying to hide that he’s actually enjoying hanging around Lakelyn again.
“Also.. it looks like it’ll storm.. so I’d lock up your boards and such.. I-if you still surf.. that is..”
She mumbled while stepping down his porch with her brother. “It’s still a hobby.” He said simply,
with a smirk on his lips. “That storm will start in a few hours though, so I should be fine, but
thanks.” He leaned against the wall and watched her every movement, as his eyes studied her
up and down slowly and carefully. What he hadn’t noticed in all of his staring and oogling was
little Elodie creeping back up behind him. Elodie looked up at her father as he watched me walk
away and loudly said “daddy was she your girlfriend?” Shiloh froze at the words of his little girl,
his face immediately turning pink, as he glanced around to make sure no other neighbor heard
her. “We were just talking.” He responded as he bent down to scoop up the little girl. Elodie
smiled, not realizing the awkwardness she’d caused. Hearing the interaction as Lakelyn walked
into her own home she laughed, then went inside with her brother. Being inside and unpack was
fun, Her and James found old photos and memories in the boxes but he decided to clear his
throat and mention the tension between Shiloh and Lake. “Did you notice the.. tension there
was between you guys? What’s up with that?” James asked casually, as he looked at lake and
made sure she was paying attention and hearing the question. “Oh.. I-i didn’t notice any..” She
lied with a flushed face. “Really?” He seemed surprised, and he raised one eyebrow. “He was
checking you out, the whole time. If you didn’t notice I certainly did. I could read the tension from
a mile away. What is it between you two?” “Well.. back in highschool.. him and I were screwing
around at this party.. You were at a football thing.. and you know mom and dad were probably
sleeping.. he snuck me out because I said I was bored.. so we went to this party.” She mumbled
with a pink face. “we drank and stuff.. then everyone got around and played spin the bottle.. it
was my turn and I was nervous.. I spun it and it landed on Shi.. I didn’t know what to do so he
kissed me and then.. it kind of clicked that he was making out with his bestfriends little sister..”
Lakes face was bright pink as she sheepishly told the story. “So he pulled away.. and I guess
we grew apart after that.. I mean I moved away after mom and dad died and went to
university..and I guess he had a kid..” She uttered the part about their parents, sensitive
material. “I guess I forgot to-“ “FORGOT TO TELL ME YOU MADE OUT WITH MY
BESTFRIEND?!” James angrily interrupted while standing up, and glaring at her. An awkward
silence fills the room after her brother’s reaction. He is now looking at this from a whole other
angle than before. “We we-“ She tried to explain herself but was stopped mid sentence, as her
brother interrupted again.“What do you mean just ‘forgot’?” He asks with an annoyed and angry
tone, a glare staring straight at her. “Well.. I-i mean we were drinking but you can’t be mad about
that can you?” She argued while sitting up on the couch, nearly choking on her words. “So
what? You think that just because you were drunk I won’t be mad? I’m mad you’ve made out
with my best friend behind my back!” Her brother’s tone was filled with anger, his temper boiling
as he gave her a disgusted look. “We were drunk and in highschool! James it was years ago! I-I
didn’t think it mattered!” She protested again as hot tears stung her eyes. Why am I crying? She
thought. “Of course it matters!” He shouted as he put his shoes on and stepped away. “You
keep making excuses but it’s getting on my nerves!” James headed for the door, before stopping
and standing in front of Lake. “I don’t want you to talk to him, alright? Not at all. He’s my best
friend and you’ve made out with him while drinking, now he thinks you like him or something. Do
not talk to him, understand?” He grumbled while pointing a finger in her face. “James? That’s horrible and you know it! You’re being petty!” She mumbled.. him yelling was enough to send
her over the edge.. She’s always hated being yelled at.. arguments are the worst and she
despises them. “Petty my ass!” He yelled back while his eyes were filled with nothing but anger,
before he suddenly calmed down and let out a sigh. Seeing her upset made him realize how
much he was overreacting, how much of a jerk he was being. He looks at Lakelyn, trying not to
be harsh while talking. He then spoke calmly, but was still so furious. “Look, I’ll be honest with
you. I am pretty pissed about this. Years ago or not. You did this and kept it from me. I have
every right to be mad at you right now.” He said with a sigh. “Could you.. j-just go..” She
mumbled while looking down at her feet, her breath shook, her hands trembled. She felt like she
might have a panic attack.. her own brother should’ve known better than to yell this way, or act
like this. “Fine. I’ll leave.” James finally complied as he turned around and exited. She couldn’t
help but feel terrible, as he shut the door as he left. She could hear his car start and drive off.
She was alone now, feeling her hands shake and your breath trembled. She realized how much
that argument had affected her, and how angry that interaction had made James. He left and
she tried her best to steady her breathing.. before she felt like she just couldn’t anymore. She
hopped into car and drove to the bakery. It was almost midnight and she was driving to work.
That’s just sad. She walked inside, flipped the lights on, pulled her long hair back into a ponytail,
threw an apron on and started baking. This was her coping mechanism. Gonna cry? Bake a
lemon tart? Cramping? Bake yourself a chocolate cake, but tonight she was just sad.. and hurt..
so she made herself her mother’s homemade salted caramel apple pie recipe.
