Angelica entered the round table room just as the clock hit 6:45 am, Hotch, Derek, Spencer and Prentiss were all present. The team had been called in early, Hotch not bothering to explain the reason over the phone. As JJ was on maternity leave, Angelica was the last to arrive at the office as she took her seat beside Derek.
Hotch clicked a button on the remote that controlled the projector, a clip from a live stream then appeared.
"12:00 am this morning, a link to a streaming site was shared and spread virally."
Hotch clicked play on the video. The video showed 10 malnourished teenagers standing in a circle as a voice communicated a set of rules.
"Welcome to the Roulette, here are the rules to ensure we find out victor. Rule 1: No alliances, Rule 2: No communicating with the cameras and Rule 3: there can only be one victor. If any one of these rules are broken you'll immediately be eliminated and with that let our first ever game of death begin! Cast your bets below viewers !"
The voice was unnervingly jolly about such a morbid game of death. The teenagers trembled as the klaxon rung loudly, initiating the start of the games. The boys began to find weapons as the girls tried to run to safety, however before long 6 of the 10 'players' were dead, leaving 2 boys and 2 girls left. The team watched the clip in horror until Hotch paused it.
"So our unsub is forcing young adults to fight to the death? Why?"
Emily furrowed her brow.
"Money perhaps? The unsub did mention 'casting bets' on the players which is usually synonymous with controlled environments like boxing and soccer."
Spencer suggested, his hands practically speaking for him. Angelica nodded as she continued silently scribbling notes, this made Spencer raise his brow in suspicion as normally Angelica was the first to disagree with him.
"This is unusual if it's organised crime, things like this are usually on the dark web not widely spread on the internet for everyone to see, maybe the unsub is sending a message?"
Angelica commented until briefly pausing when she sees a symbol on the wall in the video. The symbol was a mockingbird with a snake wrapping behind it. Angelica quickly sketched the symbol down, intrigued to know it's meaning.
"A mockingbird and a snake..."
Angelica continued, her face contorting into an expression of serious concentration.
"Mockingbirds normally symbolise innocence and harmlessness but snakes are usually a sign of death, perhaps the bird represents the victims?"
Spencer adds onto Angelica's analysis, making Angelica soften her expression in confusion and surprise. Before anyone can say anything else Penelope Garcia rushes in.
"Guys, I was looking into the stream in an attempt to identify some of the victims and the 'victor', Vanessa Amber we recently found at the side of a highway"
"Can we get her in for an interview, Garcia?"
Hotch looked over at Penelope.
"I can try my best to contact the police department that found her, sir"
"Thank you, Garcia. Now everyone lets get to work,
Wheels up"
